This seems to me to have been the hardest challenge assignment yet. Many of the images, while excellent photographs, don't seem to communicate "Beauty in an unexpected place" without some explanation by the poster. To my small brain, that's the first measure of these challenges - does the image convey the topic all by itself? As you'll see in my next post, I sure struggled with this one.
A few random observations on previous entries - and please bear in mind that unlike some posters here I am completely unqualified to offer such feedback (but it's the rule of the challenge thread!):
I really like this image. It's the sort of photo that I would use for a desktop background. Beautifully lit, focused, and composed. The simple design seems to be complemented by the simple, rustic, color palette. While I would describe it as beautiful, there is no context in which to consider it unexpected. Like I said, a bloody hard topic.
A great capture, really nicely composed, that cleverly speaks to the "beauty" part of the challenge theme. Not sure about the "unexpected" part still.
A great photograph. Is the green cast a result of the type of lights in the location? Regardless, the slightly bizarre green cast to the image seems, to me, to enhance this image. Were it beautiful, I'd say it was certainly an unexpected place (!!) - but not sure I see the beauty in either the setting or the graffiti.
This one is really cool - and is rather beautiful, and when you realize what it is, it certainly is unexpected. One of the better interpretations of the theme. Nice image - another one that would work as a desktop background.
When we first voted on this topic, the idea of a beautiful woman in an 'urban decay' setting was my immediate thought so I guess I'm partial to this simply because it was right down the middle of the fairway for the topic. Nicely lit and composed - and it sure doesn't hurt that you have a gorgeous friend/girlfriend/ wife to model for you! This was the image that best capture the topic, at least for me. Maybe a little obvious (we probably all thought of something similar) but so well executed that it pulls it off.
Question for you Foucault - did you use HDR in the post on this? I am really impressed with how evenly lit the interior is.
OK, will post my own rather weak submission next ... and am relieved that this one is behind us.
