A little more about the topic.

    element |ˈeləmənt|
    noun

    • ( elements) the rudiments of a branch of knowledge
    • a group of people of a particular kind within a larger group or organization
    • any of the four substances (earth, water, air, and fire) regarded as the fundamental constituents of the world in ancient and medieval philosophy.
    • A person's or animal's natural environment (in his/her/it's element)
    • ( the elements) the weather, esp. strong winds, heavy rain, and other kinds of bad weather

Examples: children learning; people at a rally; landscapes, seascapes, fire and such; swimmers, bikers, climbers, fisher folk and such; storms and a bunch of other possibilities.

Plenty of latitude for creativity. Think out of the box. That's part of the Challenge.

This is just a snap but has 'Earth, wind, water and fire' well sort of - the dirty grey cloud in the back ground is the pollution cloud being blown towards my part of town. No smoke without fire

    Axis,
I find the flames very striking, and I really dig the colors of blue and yellow/orange together. However, I do wonder if the photograph would be better if cropped square, I find the trellis on the left to be distracting. Overall, the the photo is in great focus, did you use a tripod?

I have some others without the background (took a few from different angles as the light fell from the sky) - but felt they were slightly less interesting. I'd post one - but I think these contests are "1 and done" aren't they? lol

Some were on tripods, some not. To be honest - not sure on this one.

thanks for the feedback and encouraging words.

    Colorado storm

Nice to be back! Went to Denver for a 5 day conference and got stuck for 13 days after our flight was cancelled because of the Icelandic volcano. I'm still trying to catch up with everything.

This was taken out of the side window when I was in the back seat of a car:

Wood, stone, and water. Cisco Grove, California. I'm not sure if I like the crop, but there is not much to work with.

Congrats on making it back and on a cool shot. I love the clouds and the light, I just wish all the street lamps and signs weren't in there.

Thanks! I did wonder about the lamp posts and things and decided the storm looked more threatening against the spindly man-made artifacts. Have a look at this one and see what you think. I've left in a couple of less conspicuous ones.

I do like it better. I think it draws your eye deeper into the picture to what is the focus of it for me, the light coming through the clouds.

Personally I'd leave it and let the rocks speak for themselves.

I would suggest some dodge and burn. Eliminating some of the shadow on the rocks and darkening the sky may help the image.
