Another one, different flashlight. First one had some editing in Aperture. This one is unedited, except for cropping.

This is a really interesting photo. I like the effect you got with the flashlight mentioned in your Flick post. What kind of flashlight did you use and how did you come to decide on the exposure time? The flashlight photos I have tried don't keep the color as true as this.

The only bad thing about it is the fact that it's a memorial.

Dale

Thanks, Dale.
I have no idea what kind of flashlight that was used that evening. I was with a local Flickr friend and it was his light. He had several that evening.

The exposure time was just trial and error. We did a bunch of takes till we got a time I liked.

Boy, but the tricky part really was the light painting. It's a real art to get it to look good. Not too much. Not too little. I remember at least 30 tries till I got this last one.

I think I like this one better. The light on the flowers and beads is more interesting. It is hard to tell it isn't "crisp" because we don't have a link to the full size version to view.

My only complaint is that the shadows on the second image are too strong against the wall. I like the more subtle shadows of the first image, but it lacks the "glow" of the second. If you could some how do both at the same time, I think you'd be closer to what you're trying to do.

What might I have done to make it better?

What if you set it up in a pitch black room and then do the "light painting" on the flowers in the foreground. A lot of contrast would make the white flowers really jump out.

I wish I had more time to try some things myself, just too busy these days! But it is fun looking at everyone's photos here.

Good luck and have fun!

6 sec exposure inside DTW airport concourse C, put the camera on the floor and hold it while the shot taken.
People walked by are not seen in this pict except at the very end.
Sorta like that Stephen King Movie "The Langoliners".
(exif data in the pict.)

Old Merc

Not the greatest photo of all time! But I liked the range of colours from the top right in the sky down through the green of the tree and the white of the car.

Enjoying looking at the other photos here, lots of inspiration and motivation to keep trying different things.

The camera was on a 2sec timer resting on my cars bonnet hence the mess in the bottom left hand corner.

Heres one of Abdoun bridge, Amman

It had just rained really hard, the picture is uncropped.

I debated on posting a 1 sec as long or not, however compared to 1/60 sec it's 60 times longer....anyway...lots of cools stuff can be done with "long" exposures

This is a 1 second exposure with flash at the end to freeze the people.
Those are simple glow sticks, I'm the guy middle/bottom with the wireless remote taking the shot...

I like this one a lot. Great feeling of motion and a good use of unusual perspective/point of view. I was through this airport on my way to Kalamazoo a few years back. Not the best layout in the world. The moving sidewalk is an experience to say the least.

Very cool. The clouds are great and that is a beautiful bridge. Nicely lit. I'm not sure you would even want to crop it. Maybe a 16 x 9 crop that removes some of the bottom foliage but I think it's also great the way it is.

First real attempt at long exposure. I can tell I lost some sharpness.. time to get a remote I guess:eek:

26mm f16 30 sec ISO100

Neat shot. Where you on the ice when you took it? A remote will help for sure. It's worth the investment. If not then just set the timer for long enough for any vibrations to settle from pushing the shutter.

Ha! Just took a longer look at the photo and realized that wasn't ice. The building on the left had me fooled. Shows how a long exposure can really make an image different.

Thx Dale, all I can add is in this post 9/11 taking picts in airport people really looked at me.
Here I was, stopping instead of rushing, putting the camera on the floor, and holding it still (pushing it down) for multiple seconds....
