I will get the Verizon iPhone if it comes out.

What I am more concerned with are reasonable data plans.

Verizon announced their data plans. $30 unlimited is still available. :D

Another 'reliable' rumor that's about to hit bust.

Has Fortune ever thrown their $.02 in before? They aren't as prone to tossing out baseless rumors like WSJ.

Edit: Reading full article. This is not Fortune just backing up WSJ or NYT. This is Fortune stating that their own sources confirm a Verizon iPhone.

(The answer: yes. Fortune has confirmed that a Verizon iPhone will be released in early 2011.)

How long will you keep your blinders on?

Do you ever leave the US? If so, leave your new VZ iPhone behind because it'll be useless.

Dave

That's the bottom line it is a useless iphone if you can’t travel the world with it!!! Tsk, tsk, yep you guy’s heard first.:p

Then why have I taken my phone with me on more than one occasion and used it with no problem?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

We had alltel when verizon bought them and we had the same plan and the very next bill we had charged us for multiple things we don't even have. So my dad talked to 15 or so different ppl on the phone some barely speaking English to finally get 80% paid back

It all depends on where you live buddy. I'd happily take a CDMA iPhone living here in AZ. If you get out of the major metro areas hear, AT&T, or more accurately, T-Mobile their AZ rural carrier SUX!!! Voice and data at the same time? In 2+ years of use, I thing I've maybe need that ability once. I'd much rather be able to make a phone call when I need to. Besides, LTE rollout to rural areas is going to be last on the list, for ANY carrier. By that time, it will be iPhone6.

I currently live in Mesa. For me the Verizon service is better. My office is in a basement and Verizon keeps enough of a signal to make calls, other carries do not. My friends live outside of Tucson and at their house Verizon gets signal but others do not very well. When I go back to upstate NY many of the rural areas get Verizon better. However, the coverage of ATT has improved enough that I would consider the switch. My friends with iphones are less inconvenienced than they were a couple of years ago. So I would consider the trade off for the perks of the iphone. My current phone is 7 years old and not a smart phone. Part of the debate for me right now is whether I need the extra features of a smart phone at all. With the better camera, gps and facetime on wifi I'm starting to like the idea of upgrading.

lol @ all you children that screamed, moaned, and bitched ever since these rumors surfaced in February saying it won't happen, VZW will never the the iPhone, yadda yadda yadda.

You have proof this rumor is any different than the previous ones?

As much as you might <3 ATT, competition is good for the user. Having more than 1 carrier carry the iPhone can do nothing but reduce price and increase ATT coverage.

I find it silly to be a cheerleader for a phone carrier. I like Verizon for my own needs but it doesn't bother if others prefer ATT. Some of us just don't believe these bogus rumors because we know they are not true. It has nothing to do with a hatred for ATT. At least for some of us.

Its so funny how people that have At&t iPhones or people that hate Verizon are in denial that its coming. PEOPLE its coming! Who cares if its only CDMA and not LTE yet, is there a 4G iPhone out anywhere right now? Anyone? Exactly, so quit with all the "no iPhone until the LTE iPhone".

Dont know if im more excited for January to get the iPhone or to hear the crickets come out for all those people that say "CDMA is dead", "Verizon iPhone needs LTE", "Wont survive with no voice and data"... Geez people, shut up with that!

Fine, but please ask him to lend me his Verizon iPhone because I can't seem to make any calls on my AT&T iPhone. ;)

+1
I'm leaving NYC now where I had horrible coverage most of the time with AT&T.
Its always very difficult to make calls and email in SoHo, for example.
The Verizon dumb phone I had with me always had full bars.

When I get home to San Jose I'll have the same thing to deal with.

I'll keep my unlocked 3GS after the VZ iphone comes out for the rare occassions when I leave the US. You just drop in a prepaid sim card.

For those who live in areas with good AT&T coverage, I envy you.

Yeah.. because you can't travel the world without a cell phone. Before cell phones, people didn't dare travel beyond the garden gate for fear of falling off the end of the world and not have any means of Twittering about it.

My Verizon Palm Pre would be useless outside the U.S. as well.

But since Verizon is the only carrier that works 100% of the time everywhere I go, it's the only logical carrier to use.

For the infrequent times I do leave the U.S., i'll just have to pick up a cheap T-Mobile prepaid.

Keep in mind that early 2011 isn't just January. They can also announce it in March.

No point in releasing in March if they're going to release the iPhone 5 in June/July. At least there's a good 6 month gap between a January iPhone 4 release and a July iPhone 5 release.

F that. How does a person even leave the house without a mobile phone? It can't be done!

I know I'm in the minority, but my customer service experience with VZW has been way better than with AT&T. Much friendlier and also dealt with the several small issues I've had much more quickly and efficiently. I've not yet had a complaint about VZW and I've been with them for about 5 years.

Also I live on the North Coast of CA. AT&T coverage here is awful. You pretty much have to be in town (pick one) for service. VZW on the other hand is everywhere except where there is no service from any provider. (Yes these places still exist.):D

I've got a Droid and it does what it's supposed to, but if I have wifi access I use my iPod for email, social networking, games, and such since it's always in my truck for music. Besides syncing with my other Macs and finally dropping Gmail with an iPhone, what I look forward to the most is the iOS is just way nicer to use than Android.

The ironic thing is that Verizon's original decision turned out pretty well:

  • They ended up backing Android, which is predicted to become the most popular mobile OS in the world.
  • They've kept their network reputation intact so far, unlike AT&T.

A side question is, are they goofing up by not being a premier WP7 carrier like AT&T. Is AT&T better at predicting hits? Or just lucky so far?

I think we're only a minority on this board.

I've had Verizon for 5 years, after switching from At&T. This was pre-smart phone, and At&T had problems then.

Never had a single issue with Verizon. And look forward to an iPhone in January!

I read a lot of articles mentioning AT&T choosing to partner with Apple but I remember a company called Cingular back in the day

Yep, make that 3 of us. Don't have Verizon right now, switched for the iPhone. It's been a painful journey. AT&T's 3G network is finally decent here in Dallas, but still not as good as Verizon.

Verizon CS always treated me very well.

its coming....

Now how long will it take to unlock so I can take it to sprint :)

I regret to inform you that you Will probably have to wait a good 10 hours after it's released.

I have never left the US, and would not be surprised if I never do.

Well see 1/6/11. I'm make sure to PM you when it happens. :p

Ha good idea, I should start taking names and send a mass we told you so.

Yes and no. The Verizon iphone rumors have been consistently wrong. It is more wishful thinking than substantive rumors. The rumors posted here concerning other issues tend to be closer to the truth, or when not, the posts usually contain some information about why the rumor may not be true. It seems like macrumors does not wish to downplay the iphone rumors like they do others. I imagine because it is exciting and people want to believe it. So why kill the excitement?

Everyone of these posted rumors should have disclaimers:
1. A listing of all previously reported "reliable" rumors of a Verizon iphone release date. Just list the dates that have come and gone and were supposedly true that time for some reason or another.
2. A statement that it was revealed in a court case that Apple and ATT have a contract until 2012. Several articles have stated that a contract could have been revised, but unlike the contract revealed in the court case, no revised contract has been revealed. It is wishful thinking that the contract was redone.

Its strange that mac rumors will post a rumor they have found and when necessary report that the source has a poor track record or give some other reason for doubting it if they feel necessary but they refuse to point out these reasons for doubting the verizon iphone rumors again and again. So it goes.

no verizon iPhone rumors have been fake until about July of 2010, from that point on there have been over 50 posts on macrumors, all of them pointing ton January or early 2011 launch of verizon iPhone. Since it is not 2011 yet we do not know if the rumors are wrong yet.

Exactly, a history of false rumors....only one of which was considered somewhat reliable (the Verizon iPad)...does not indicate that the current round of information is false.

Sure, due to false rumors in the past we should be careful not to assume they are 100% true, but we should not just ignore them like the boy who cried wolf. That would just be stupidity.

Also, this time the rumors have been very consistent in nature staring in March and now cite multiple sources from different publications. WSJ has a source, NYT has a source, and Fortune now claims to have verification as well. They have never called it anything more than a rumor until now.

Oh, and corporate contracts are rarely released publicly. To claim that the 5 year contract revealed in the court case is still valid unless you see proof of a revision is just stupid as well. You'll probably never see it. The proof will be the release of a Verizon iPhone.

Yep! I agree 100%, the 50 posts was me reinforcing the fact that it is likely to happen

a history of bad rumors from 2007 to spring of 2010.
starting in spring of 2010, there have been many ligit rumors all pointing to a january/early 2011 launch, however those rumors were mixed in with a bunch of a BS rumors saying the same thing, which is the reason people are still doubting

Well, I put no weight on the MR posts. ;) Heck, I don't even listen to WSJ. What has me perking my ears up are the NYT and Fortune statements.

Edit: Forgot to mention DigiTimes and John Gruber. DigiTimes is not exactly reliable, but what they reported in March has been pretty consistently backed up since then, that the Verizon iPhone would start being manufactured at the end of this year. I don't recall John Gruber being wrong yet.

Edit2: To quote PCWorld:

Apple has a reputation for secrecy and controlling leaks, but the sheer volume of Verizon iPhone reports, all telling the same story, suggest that it's just a matter of time before Jobs announces the darned thing. At this point, even Verizon can barely contain itself.
