I accidentally my whole location.
Found this on xlr8yourmac:

forty-two

What is forty-two?
forty-two is a system, comprised of the forty-two.app GUI, the dvdmp and dvdvx engines and certain *nix tools used for video compression and conversion. It is designed to be a simple, hassle-free tool for converting DVD's to other formats, such as DiVX, SVCD or VCD.

What makes forty-two different is that it is driven by logic; it determines proper encoding framerates, cropping etc and produces in-sync, set and forget results for all dvd types it supports. forty-two doesn't just pass switches to Open Source tools. It uses different methodologies from current make tools to insure that in sync conversions *can* be done, based on the content.
forty-two will convert DVDs with ac3 audio to VCD, SVCD, DVD or DiVX AVI, including user rates. If your DVD is PCM only or DTS only, you can only convert it to DiVX AVI with forty-two at this time.

Requirements

forty-two requires a Macintosh computer running MacOS X 10.2.3 or above. Your computer must be able to play DVDs.The BSD must be installed on your current system. (install via your OS X install disc)

You can get the app here and it would also be worthwile to check out this thread.

This is also on the page.

osXboxISO

What is osXboxISO?
osXboxISO allows Mac Users to create UDF iso9660 dvd disk images that are compatable with the MicroSoft Xbox by simply dropping a folder of files on the applicaticon.

Additionally, these disks are known to work on DVD players that can read files from iso file systems for mpeg or audio playback

This will also be nice, if it works. Does anyone know if this might work without a MOD chip?

I downloaded both - I will report back as soon as I have results.

Thanks for the great link!

Dan

Okay, can i install BSD without causing problems with the rest of my system? i don't have to reformat, or anything, right? also, will it make things different in the future, or can i just ignore it when not using it? i don't have a clue about the whole thing... but i definitely want to try this...

should be transparent when installed... there is no reason not to install it always in the future...

don't know about installing it after the fact.

When I run forty-two it starts fine. When it goes to show the preview movie before continuing I run into trouble. The movie file meant for preview cannot be found. Sherlock doesn't find it, even when searching invisible items.

Has anyone else tried this out? Any reports on setup?

I thought the default Jaguar installation installs it automatically.

Yes, the default 'standard' install does put BSD on you're machine, but you can do a custom install and set it no not install it.

Did u read the readme file? In there it tells you that you need to download some stuff and put it into the Library. Check the readme for full information.

I can't seem to download mpeg2enc (I just get some alien computer language) and my computer doesn't seem to recognize the file format of mplayer...:(
Help!

iGod, right click 'save link to disk' and make sure the .txt extension is taken off.

Everything works until terminal launches, then i get this-

[mine-Computer:~] mine% /tmp/.wd
--: /Net: No such file or directory
--: exec: /Net: cannot execute: No such file or directory
[mine-Computer:~] mine%

Any ideas what this means? I'm saving to a 2nd HD, could that be the issue?

I had the same problem. When i command-f'ed files modified today, the Finder would quit every time. I read all the documentation I could find, and I finally gave up and told it to exit gracefully.

Then when I started to try again, the test appeared on my desktop, right where I told it to save. Woo hoo!

I opened it in vlc. Sound but no image. I opened it in QT. Error. Damn.

I'm trying again with different settings now (I was trying divx 1 CD). Let's see how I go this time...

Looks like a really sweet tool though, if I can get it to work!

All you file not found guys, here's the thing. I spoke to the author and it seems that both folders (file and temp) can not have spaces in them. So for this release what ever path you are saving to make sure there are no spaces. He said it would be fixed soon. Also "your *boot* drive can have spaces in the name..this is cool. But any mounted extra drives cannot"

I just found this out, so I'm gonna try it again.

Hmm, well I read that too, but no path relating to anything to do with 44 had a space in it.

I fiddled a bit, and ripping to high quality divx works for me as advertised. A full Buffy episode (44 mins) in 380 MB. Tasty. But I already own the DVD... so a smaller and lower quality version is really rather useless to me :)

Sensational product though, when it works. Very impressive, and very simple. I remember back in my day when DVD ripping was an amazingly borng and difficult thing to do. Now this comes along and all my old skills are nearly useless! Damn ease of use, damn it!

I haven't been able to get mine to work yet, but I was wondering, is it possible to only convert sections of a movie - for example, could I make a CD of specific movie clips? Or does it have to be the entire film?

Argh! Still doesn't work. Any other way of getting mpeg2enc?
ALSO I still can't get mplayer to open - it is not a recognizable file format and asks me which application I'd like to open it in...:(

God, make sure you download it in IE or Navigator, Safari adds the extension to it. I got everything to work, but once it's ready to actaully rip, it can't find it's preview file to continue with. I don't think you can open mplayer, the apps will open automatically when it's ready.

Ah, finally, I have been waiting for them to release this for a few weeks!

doesn't work for me

I set up everything as indicated but I get the message "mencoder missing", but it is where it should be. Also, mpeg2enc looks like a text file even though I dl in IE and has no .txt . Please help! I use a PBG4 1G.

DVD ripping not 4 the rest of us yet

While many of these applications can work, they are all hampered by the long and complicated process involved in doing a simple rip. With audio CDs the process could not be simpler: insert the CD, launch iTunes and press the 'Import' button. When DVD ripping software has reached this stage of simplicity, then they would be worth my time.

mencoder comes in it's own folder, it can NOT be in that folder in the application support folder. you must copy the folder's contents to the forty-two folder in app support.

here's my problem when i try and run 42:
