I actually just returned that model. The ripping speeds were very slow, much slower than the 3.3X or faster I get out of a three year old LG desktop drive stuffed in a crappy USB 2 enclosure.

I would love to find a slim external drive with high speed BD ripping but such a drive does not appear to yet exist.

That's the drive I have and it was showing as burning at 4x for me when I did some discs. I can live with the slow speed compared to burning a DVD for the benefit of getting 25gb on a disc.

I am referring to ripping speed (ripping commercial BD with MakeMKV for example) not the burning speed.

My desktop BD drive that's 4 years old can hit 4X on ripping, but the little samsung slim drive topped out at 2.2x despite the claim of 6X reads. It was also much slower to load the disc menu, etc, so all in all it just wasn't worth it to me. I will just break out the large drive when I need to rip something and put it away when I'm done.

Dear Board,

I've seen a couple of threads on here about Blu-Ray burners for the late 2012 iMacs.

I do a ton of photography work (work in raw format).....and work with CS6, Lightroom 4.3 as well. So, my storage needs are huge.

I went on Amazon and found a great device. It works flawlessly with my new iMac.

It's only USB 2.0, but it did the trick for me.

Hope this helps anyone else who is looking. (And no, I do not work for the manufacturer or the seller. I'm a hobbyist photographer and way too busy to hawk products on the side. : )

I just got one of these drives and it seems to work great. When ripping CD's, it's definitely faster than the Apple superdrive and it plays Blu-Rays perfectly (I'm using the Macgo Blu-Ray Player software).

Basically it's a laptop Blu-Ray drive with an external case. It closely matches the aluminum look of the iMac but too big to sit on the iMac stand so it needs to be off to the side on the desk. The cord that it comes with is VERY short.

Haven't tried burning DVD's, CD's or Blu-Rays yet but so far so good.
