I found a lost iPhone the other night. It's passcode protected. Anyway to trace it back to its owner?

I would think if you brought it to a nearby Apple store, or a carrier store that it belongs to, they could get it to the original owner

Bring it to the local police station. The store will need to call them anyway. Hopefully the owner will activate lost mode and place a phone number to call on the message.

If Siri is working try the usual stuff:

"redial" -- ask whomever it calls who owns the phone
    "call home"
"call mom" or dad or any number of common names

"dial 1234567890" substituting your phone number so you can see the caller ID and then google search the phone's phone number to see if you get a hit.

Keep it powered up and where it has cell service to see if the owner puts it into Lost mode with a message.

Beyond that your best bet is turn it in to the police and advise the management of the place where you found it that you've turned in a phone. May not ever make it to its owner but you'll have at least made an honest effort.

Well it has been the weekend. Perhaps he found the phone's owner and she was extremely "appreciative" for returning her phone and he hasn't had the chance to come up for air?

    j/k
