does it matter at all if the iphone is jailbroken????
my friend got a jailbroken iphone 3G and has tmobile SIM but has no data plan for a long time, when jailbroken does the network of the provider not detect anything or....

or if someone has a AT&T SIM and puts it in a jailbroken iphone 3G will it be the same situation???? will AT&T detect they have an iphone and give them a data plan automatically? my friend does not want a data plan with the iphone 3G so pretty much an expensive ipod touch lol will this work for him?

he just want the phone with wi-fi no data plan?

IMEI is the answer

I was looking at this post hoping for some IMEI mods because is how AT&T detects the type of phone you have. Every time you turn on your phone it sends the IMEI to the carrier to verify the info.

Therefore, AT&T can run a kinds script and pull all the SmartPhones IMEI in their database and add data to them. If you see the first few numbers of the IMEI in the phones are unique to each manufacture. In this case Apple only makes smartphones.

After extensive research I have found that reasons for iPhone 1st Gen can go w/o data plan is because they are either "grandfathered" (activated before 09/2009) by at&t or because they don't want to allocate resources to go after old models.

To avoid that is modding the IMEI of the phone. Any other method such as ASP or Datablock is just luck that AT&T's script hasn't hit your IMEI yet.

Until the data mandate is not abolished. I am staying with my 1st gen iPhone. Hopefully Verizon get the iPhone 4 so maybe AT&T decides to eliminate the mandate.

Doesn't work

The ignorance in this thread is absolutely mind-boggling.

Let me me absolutely unequivocally clear: you CAN use an iPhone with AT&T and have NO DATA PLAN.

I've personally been doing it for nearly a full year on my original iPhone.

It's really pretty simple:

Put SIM in non-smart phone.

Call or go into AT&T and tell them to put a data block on that line.

Get on WiFi on iPhone with NO SIM installed and browse to unlockit.co.nz

Install fake APN.

Put SIM into iPhone.

The iPhone will literally be unable to access the internet when not on WiFi. When you log into your account online, your device WILL show the iPhone but it will NOT automatically add the data plan.

I haven't tried this on my iPhone 4 but it should/would work the exact same way.

I followed James' instructions. I went directly to the AT&T store and had the data blocked from my daughter's Samsung phone. They even gave me a confirmation receipt. Next, I connected the iphone 3G to Wifi, without any SIM card. Then I went to unlockit and installed a fake APN (it even saved an icon on my phone like an app). Then I inserted the card into the iphone.

His system worked - for about two weeks. My daughter just received a text from AT&T stating that a data plan is required.

Although James was adamant that his method works, I can assure you that it does not.

I knew it:)
All these bs tricks to avoid a data plan on AT&T don't work. They will eventually catch on.
