There has to be some way to reset it. Maybe at the Genius Bar?

I believe if you take the device along with proof of purchase, Apple may be able to help. Wouldn't iCloud Activation lock render it little more than a paperweight now?

Good idea. I don't have proof of purchase from a decade ago but i suspect that their system would keep a record proving an engraved item was sold to me. Or not.

All I want is to load some going to sleep books/music/sounds and keep it by my bed. I probably have an old nano kicking around somewhere that would do the trick.

What generation? If it's a 4th gen or older you can reset it using iTunes, and any lock will be removed. It was only in iOS 7 that a device iCloud lock was added, and the 4th and lower cannot run iOS 7.
