Why did the uncle even pick it up in the first place? I would have just left it where it was--maybe the owner would have realized that he forgot it and returned to get it. Or if not, then maybe an airport worker would have found it (or someone else would have stolen it). But at least, the uncle wouldn't have been the one to steal it, which is what he effectively did by picking it up and not returning it.

Having said that, if someone did send me the iPhone, then I guess I would have called Apple to see whether they could identify the owner. Failing that, then honestly, at that point, being several days/weeks later and in a different country (as others have pointed out, the local police wouldn't have done anything with it) and without knowing how I could reliably identify and return it to the rightful owner, I probably would have just kept it and tried to see whether I could do anything with it.

Amazing that

this kind of subject needs to be discussed. What is going through the heads of the old man who thought it OK to send a phone which is not his to a relative in another country.

The world's got lots of crazy people in it. Give it back. It ain't yours idiot....

If the owner is smart he/she'll contact their network provider and get the IMEI blocked. All you can do is hand it in to the police or the airport.

Unfortunately the US companies do not do anythign about IMEI blocking. They block sim cards but will use a listed of blacklisted IMEI

Well, its in another country now so either way it cant be blacklisted.
I would at least have tried to return it... my iPhone's like apart of me(I know Im sad) so think about that poor iphoneless person :'(
