I found an iPhone in the street this morning and I was in a rush to work, so I turned it off to conserve battery life so I could check on it later. I turned it on later in the day to see if anyone had sent it a message or a voicemail or something (this had worked in returning a Blackberry I found the previous year) but this phone has no bars/no service. I tried taking the sim card out and putting it back in, in case it had gotten jarred in a fall-- but still no service.

It was set in another language, so once I figured out how to get it back in English-- I found what I hope is the owner's email address. I've sent them an email and am waiting to hear back.

Does the lack of service mean the service was shut off after they lost it, or is it a chance it was damaged when it landed in the street? It doesn't appear to have been run over, but if I don't hear back, I may put up flyers in the area.

If its unlocked why not just call a few of the numbers stored as contacts?
