As much as I wanna say keep it (I would). Can it be seen a as hard drive? If so can you see the system files. If you can, copy those files over then import into itunes. I am not sure if this will still show user info, but it's another option.

My PC sees it.. but it says it's not accessible..and needs to be reformatted.
My mac sees it.. but won't open it.. it just gives me the spinning wheel of doom... and ejects it.
So if it wasn't broken before.. it is now... LOL
I guess since windows will see it.. i will try to reformat it.. and all that jazz..
Don't know if i will keep it ( assuming it works) .. I don't really need it.
Wow mate you need to chill...THE FINDER IS POSTING ON THESE FORUMS TO SEE IF THERE IS ANY WAY HE/SHE CAN RETURN IT, NOT SELL IT FOR PROFIT.
Since each and every iPod has a unique serial number, you could try contacting Apple and get their help in determining the owner of the iPod, I'm sure they will be more than happy to help.
If you don't want to keep it, give it to a local AppleCenter next time you pass one, and report it as lost. That way, if someone comes in looking for a lost iPod, they might be in with a chance of being reunited. That'll give you some awesome Karma
I would personally just keep the iPod, and make no effort in looking for the original owner. It's not that I'm heartless, far from it, but if you're carrying around a 250$ music player you should just keep a better eye on it.
Taking it to the police also wouldn't help much. How many people actually reclaim found items from the police? I think these cases can be counted on one hand.
That said, I wouldn't sell it either. I would keep it just as a collectible.
