Ive found 512,1tb,2tb nvme ssd that fit this with 2000+mbps read and write too.
Makes the cost of making my Mac 1tb roughly 220 dollars.

Interesting but I wonder if a MacBook with this adapter and nvme drive will also have hibernation problems and battery drain like the 2013 to 2015 MBPs.

Yes it does, I used a 2TB PCI-E X4 NVME which was hard to source, you need a 2242 NVME size, Sabernt makes these.

They also have the 2242 size in 512 and 1TB on amazon. Zero issues with sleep or anything else. I did have to drill out the second nvme stand so this fit, but it was extremely easy. This also worked with 2242 AND 2220 size M.2 drive, but the speed was drastically slower. The rocket i tossed in is the same speed as the old one.

What do you mean drilling out the NVME stand ??

Hey Alexander, I got this adapter and a Crucial P1 2280. Should this work in my A1708? It doesn't get detected in diskutil from Internet Recovery. If it should work is there something I need to do?
I already reset the SMC and PRAM.

Could you also explain why you had to drill out the Apple SSD? I have seen this video and the guy gets out the original SSD without an issue. I have a MacBook Pro 2017 with 128GB without Touch Bar (2 TB3) and would love to update to, maybe, 1 or 2 TB.
This guy gets the Apple SSD out okay, though then uses a 2282 NVMe which obviously does not fit too well.

I have just ordered the adapter US$ 9.95 - Though may not arrive here until June or possibly July! Good to have it here, even though I am not 100% sure that I will use it.

Yes the shorter 2242 even has the place to screw it down. I think that the issue with the longer 2282, apart from being a total hack, is that it overlaps the processor heat sink which already is the hottest part of the laptop.

I found out my issue. I needed to create a bootable macOS installer and my Crucial P1 was then detected

Is that Crucial P1 a 2242 NVMe drive?
Do you have a Black Magic speed test? To see how the speed compares with the original Apple SSD drive.

In the Mac Diskspeed Test app, my original 128gb ssd reads at 2200 MB/s and writes only at 750 MB/s.
According to Sabrent's specifications the 2242 512gb ssd reads at 1700 MB/s and writes at 1550 MB/s.
I also have bought this item but don't know when will arrive, because of the current situation, shipments do not work as well.
