Fox today debuted a new app called Movie of the Day! [Direct Link] which aims to provide customers a new daily discount on one movie from Fox's large catalog (via Engadget).

Every day the app updates with a new movie deal, ranging from "from blockbusters to acclaimed indies, and everything in between," at a discount which goes up to 70 percent off of the original price. To start off, the app is available only for iOS devices, but there are plans to expand to other app stores like Google Play. In addition to the basic daily discount, the app also lets users browse a movie's cast, check out other user reviews, and read a quick synopsis of the film.

Going live today in United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany and France, the app's first discount is a $6.99 version of X-Men: First Class, originally $14.99. Every movie showcased within the new Fox app links back to the iTunes store, so anyone taking advantage of the daily sales will be able to build up their iTunes movie catalog at a cheaper rate than normal.

Although the company hasn't made any confirmation of the next few movies to be showcased, the app's screenshot carousel hints that films like Rio 2, Fight Club, and The Fault in Our Stars could be discounted in the coming weeks. Those interested can download Movie of the Day! for free right now on the App Store.

It appears you only get the discount through the app. Searching for the movie on the iTunes Store for iTunes or iOS does not get the discounted price.

clunky clunk clunk another app :( should be built into iTunes on all devices. Yet again shows the people in charge know ****

Same price through iTunes

iTunes and this app give the same price. I searched through the OSX iTunes and the prices match.

I believe the point of the app is to alert you to the daily sale, not to offer any kind of exclusive discount. If you're just in iTunes, you'd have to go looking for the daily sale.

Personally, I just follow @iTMSMovieDeals on Twitter for notifications on all movie/TV discounts.

For the price of watching an entire month of films and tv shows on Netflix, $8 finally buys us single movie on iTunes as long as it's one from Fox studios specially chosen by them the day we buy it.

...gee why do people illegally download our films?

Canadian version

The deal isn't quite as good in Canada. Despite the same $14.99 starting price, Canadian users get "X-Men: First Class" discounted to only $11.99, (as opposed to the U.S. version's $6.99 with a $14.99 regular price.) That's disappointing.

That's ownership vs rental basically right there.

I prefer to own my own music, because I listen to song multiple times - owning is cheaper than renting (in theory). However for movies, I rarely watch movies more than once, so owning makes no sense.

Of course this is my use case.

folks in Australia are saying the Thursday Movie is Noah.
Folks in UK say Thursday Movie is The Sound of Music.

I wonder what the US store will be.

I like this. Unfortunately I just got the Digital Copy (from blurry, which is stupidly in SD :( ) this AM. So, not wanting to get the movie again even for only $7

nice though.

Meh, better deals can be had from private sources.

You wanna buy a Rolex watch, cheap.

It has all the exact bits and pieces as the original but it is just an exact replica. It doesn't cost anything. And when you are tired of it you can just reuse the parts to make a new watch.

I can get 5 iTunes HD movies for $10 right now.
