Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn plans to travel to India and explore possible locations to reopen production facilities in the country, in a move that could bring iPhone assembly and potentially lower prices to the emerging market. Reuters reports that Foxconn could benefit from lower production costs in India as wages continue to increase in China, where the majority of its operations are currently based.

"Foxconn is sending a delegation of their officers to scout for locations in a month's time," Subhash Desai, Industries Minister of India's western state Maharashtra, told Reuters. The report claims Foxconn plans to build 10-12 facilities in India, such as factories and data centers, by 2020, although the Taiwan-based company has not provided any further details about its plans.

The return of Foxconn would provide an economic boost for India, which continues to rival neighboring China in the technology sector. The manufacturing company was forced to close shop in India last year after losing client Nokia, but now eyes a return to the country with plans to manufacture iPhones, iPads and iPods.
"A return of Foxconn -- which was forced to shut up shop in India last year after client Nokia closed -- would be a major victory for India, which badly needs to turn its tech boom into a manufacturing and employment boost.

India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has sought to reboot manufacturing, but the country is yet to rival China, particularly in technology where most factories will likely be assembly units to begin with."
Foxconn assembles iPhones, iPads and a number of other products for Apple, one of its main clients, and also serves as a manufacturing partner with other consumer electronics makers such as Xiaomi, Acer and Sony. Its main competitors include Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Quanta Computer.

They did the same with Brazil. High import taxes and other means to push manufacturers to manufacture/assemble products locally to be competitive are the reason.

Will these factories come with all the bells and whistles too ... such as suicide nets?

Yeah but Brazil is organizable. India is not. There's no way Foxconn could get the performance ratios in India anywhere near those of China or even Brazil. Software companies and call centers have pulled out of Bangalore. How would Foxconn be any different? Baksheesh only goes so far... Plus there's a deep and bitter rivalry between India and China - the Indians have a superiority complex, and the Chinese are not bothered.

A while ago Foxconn had plans to open a plant in Indonesia. Local news report stated they would hire thousands and thousands and thousands of domestic workers to assemble iPhones and other Apple stuff.

Well, guess what... The Indonesian government scared the crap out of them with all kinds of regulations and 'donations' for friendship. It seems India is a little bit more welcoming...

I'm not sure how I've missed this for so long, but Foxconn was the brand of the case I used for the first computer I built when I was a kid back in 2002. Ordered it from the Tiger Direct catalog, lol. I'm old.

I believe it has something to do with Apple looking to open their stores in India. Indian Govt has a rule that 30% of materials or labor needs to be insourced from India for a Multi-National Corporation to have their presence in India.

India is the new China.

You have no idea what you're in for, kid. "Back in 2002" had me laughing.

The day chineese labour force just became to expensive is near (or has come already )

What will happen when the day arrives that everyone in the world gets paid much more in manufacturing? Will there be a huge collapse in sales, or will we all just suck up the higher prices?

I watch and wait.

Will these factories come with all the bells and whistles too ... such as suicide nets?

In poor taste.

Could the family of someone who committed suicide in a Chinese factory be reading this? Yes. Would you say that to their face? No.

When I was in India they always pointed me to the Chinese products when I asked for quality. When I was in China I don't remember anyone ever mentioning India for anything... I think that is what Mums was getting at.

Exactly ! Thats my point. India does not specialise in products so not surprising that you didn't find the Chinese referring Indian products.

Conversely, in India, there is a huge deluge of Chinese products, often much cheaper than Indian ones but with varying quality.

Facts aside, my point was more towards what Mums said about corruption.

Cheers mate !

First up it should be acknowledged that the current Indian Government has dramatically reduced corruption at a Central Government level. State level depends on the Government. UP and TN are States with issues, Gujarat has none. Every other State fits somewhere in-between.

While India presents a challenge with complex and opaque taxation policies, onerous labor laws, and land acquisition laws from the 1800's it does present a huge opportunity for Foxconn. And PM Modi needs the positive momentum that an announcement that Foxconn is coming would give him.

iPhone sales are exploding in India despite Apple India having no clue how to manage their online partners, such as Amazon, pricing in relation to their bricks & mortar partners. Unfortunately Apple India is teaching the value orientated Indian consumers that discounts are always available if you just ask. Local manufacturing will enable Apple India to widen their 'volume at all costs' strategy.

Buddha was born in Kapilavastu, in Nepal. Also, a made in India product by a company like Apple will have no issues. India, as a land of manufacturing, runs the underlying components of a serious amount of companies in the world. You would be surprised to know that many international companies source their most critical components from India. The country has serious engineering capabilities and can have quality control that is at par with the developed nations.

ColdShadow, why do you say you won't buy a product made in India, specifically?

India/China again... hm.
Surely there are more countries with a surplus of impoverished & desperate people to exploit.

While this is a funny comment, it is also laced with a lot of things it should not be.
