Is it just me who thinks India is as bad an idea as China’s was 20 years ago? The government can’t be trusted just like in China. Apple is going to India for the wrong reasons, which is not for Indian manufacturing know-how but to abide by the government’s drastic rules which have prevented Apple to have a foothold there. Apple will be manufacturing in India to have access to the market. Let’s hope the results won’t be the same as Brazil!

Supply chain diversification: it's not just a good idea, it's the prudent thing to do, especially if you have the money to do so.

One day the PRC will collapse, the way governments in China do. The CCP can't avoid the wheel of history. Apple needs to ensure it can survive that event.

I am hoping that you are aware of the fact that China had to first prove their allegiance to the USA by going to war with Vietnam. China created a precedent where one socialist country can go to war with another socialist country. At one time China even was ready to go to war with the Soviet Union. It is naive to think that USA just "gave" factories to China because of the cheap labor.

China wants to enjoy the same level of life as USA do but obviously it is against "the rules" of the current system. I believe that China faces some serious conceptual issues(the same eventually applies to Russia) by trying to fully enjoy and dominate the western system which they never originally created and only replicated. I am sure that nobody wants or needs another USA clone.

So, it's actually a Taiwan company, not a Mainland China company. There is still a fiscal difference.

Then what's the point lol. It's the states, Engineers, and power plant shareholders making the buck.

Probably not. India is a pile of sand. The rich, the privileged and the smarts are all leaving India in droves.

1. Last time I checked India has more than 100 Billionaires, Which is 4th highest in world. After US, China and Germany.

Source -

2. It added 34 Billionaire last year.

3. India is also home to worlds fastest growing millionaires.

"India is a pile of sand" is just an ignorant and uneducated comment.
Obviously its a developing country with all the problems of a developing country. But sure its headed in right direction.

Caveats: I have traveled in India - there are Indian nationals in my family and I am politically (and fiscally) centrist.

Who cares if India has 100 billionaires? they have more than a billion population and since when has the number of billionaires been an indication of anything - if the wealth and education is completely unequally distributed. Income inequality is huge:

This is to get round trade barriers - especially considering the recent military clashes (with deaths) between India and China:
India has already sanctioned Chinese companies (TikTok ban etc)

1. I already mentioned India is a developing country with all the problems of a developing country which Includes income inequality. All the developed countries were once a developing country with huge income inequality. But sure India is headed in right direction as far as economy is concerned.

2. Tik Tok is national security threat just like Huwaei or ZTE [Declared as national security threat and banned by US].
To protect Indian citizens data government banned Tit Tok as it was a threat to national security and sovereignty.

That's terrible.
Why don't Apple move assembly to Vietnam like Samsung?
I don't want Indian iPhone.

Wishful thinking, but wouldn't it be great if Apple came out and said, "We've expanded production into third world countries to help support their economy and due to the reduction of cost of assemebly we're passing on some cost savings to the consumer."

This could help Apple diversify supply chain. India can be used as an export hub to avoid tariff. However, I think India will still play a relatively small role compared to China in manufacture for Apple in the near future. India's infrastructure, skilled labor force, and manufacture efficiency lags significantly behind China. The whole supply chain is more or less in China. Plus, the Hindu nationalistic political environment is not entirely friendly for foreign companies. Recent hold up of Apple components in the custom is an example. Finally, China is a much bigger market. Even if Indian economy can grow to China's level today, which I seriously doubt, it will take a while. Overall, I don't see India become a manufacture hub in the next decade, if it ever become one.

On the other hand, such an investment could certainly help India. In addition to the obvious employment benefits, the management know-how could be valuable for India's industrialization. Certainly happy to see that.

This is a good move to keep Foxconn out of the claws of the CCP. Hopefully more Taiwanese companies follow suit with alternative measures.

While the views on Political environment is true to a greater extent, the hold up was for all Chinese imports and it had nothing to do with the ideals of Hinduism. It was because of the intrusion at the Indo-China border and the Government having balls to react.

What you should pay attention to is poverty rate and education attainment of the masses, social mobility, median population age, fertility, technology, military power, factors of religion, equality of opportunity, currency and FX, STEM and research, macroeconomics, and the will of the people.

In my personal experience and observation in academia and in business, whenever Indians have a buck or two, they flee their country and cut all ties with India. They want to marry out, live out, and never look back.

Your personal opinion is just that - 'Your personal Opinion'. Which is of course very biased and uneducated and does not match with reality at ground.

We can go on discussing about progress India has made in all the fields you mentioned in last decade or two and now its a $11 Trillion economy (PPP) and one of the fastest growing major economy[Which is not possible if every wealthy and smart was fleeing India according to 'Your Personal Opinion'] but it won't change 'Your personal opinion'. So be it.

Well, that's YOUR paranoid Personal Opinion.

So India's economy cannot even buy 6 Apple Inc.?...

Go read about the difference between GDP and National Net Wealth before going on with your calculations about which country can buy how many Apple Inc. 😂

Also no more replies from my side now.

There is that empty Wisconsin Foxconn plant sitting there doing nothing... Maybe the tax payers there that gave so much to Foxconn for them to build the factory would like to see it used to build up the local economy. You know... like what Foxconn promised.
