My buddy of mine Purchased an iPhone 11 and returned it a week later. And he still received the one year free for Apple TV+

Yeah, it is based on when you activated it online with your Apple account...

For all that could've happened, he could've just gotten it, lost it, broke it, or had it stolen and a least he'll have the year free.
