I got free Applecare
Yes, there are times when Apple can be quite generous. I bought a new 24" iMac and 2 days after it was shipped to me I got another shipment from Apple unexpectedly, it was an Applecare box with a receipt showing N/C. I called them to be sure and they said yes, your Applecare was not charged to you and is active for 3 years.
I did not get an educational discount however I did get my company discount. I don't think the discount matters, it just matters who you order from when calling Apple. I got lucky.
