So Calif
So I just got approved for the Paceline app credit card from Evolve Bank and they are giving a free Apple Watch 7 (GPS only $429 max value).

I wanted the Cellular upgrade for $100 more that I will gladly pay the difference above the $429 credit.

My current phone carrier (T Mobile) says the watch will add $15 per month more onto my plan plus $20 one time activation.

Does anyone know if there is a carrier that will take on a new account with only the Apple watch cell plan ?

I want a standalone cell AW carrier that will charge $10 or less per month without an iPhone contract....

It might depend on which plan you are in but t mo also has a restricted plan that costs $5/month adding it to your account

Would love to pay $5 / month but my TMO account rep said I have a non Magenta plan (old grandfathered Family plan) and it will cost $10/month...

Looking for a $5 month plan !

What would a proper plan be?
$5 or 10 / month is very doable since I rarely leave my iPhone.
Guess I am not happy with my current carrier who wants $15/month.
Maybe I should just get the GPS only version and be done ?

You don’t have to activate the cellular. If you leave it deactivated you can still use it for emergency calling and you can always activate it later if you find a better plan.

Really ?

911 emergency calls can be made thru the AW7 without activation ???

That would be what I wanted - in case I get separated from my iPhone, the AW can make an emergency call.

That's correct. North America for sure. Most of Europe too. I don't think it's worldwide but it's very widespread.

Your old phones with their SIMs removed can still call 911.

(To clarify - it does not allow you to call your "Emergency Contact" - it allows you to call emergency services (911 in NA).

I was actually asking for the name or names of plans(carrier?etc.) that would be considered good for adding the watch.

So, there's actually a cell radio in the non-cellular model watch? Or would it be using a local wifi connection? Example being the Apple ad with the biker who has taken a fall, that 911 call can be done with a cellular model watch?

The non-cellular would use wifi to an iPhone and call from the iPhone, it has no cellular radio.
The cellular model can make emergency calls in North America whether it is activated or not.

Okay, that's what I thought, you'd need an iPhone with you for the non-cell model watch to make that 911 call. But if you've got your phone with you... I guess using whatever device is more convenient given the situation.

Yep.

What I'm referring to is that you can get the emergency call benefits of the cellular model without activating the cellular plan on the cellular model.

WOW!

I thought 911 emergency dialing on non active / untied cellular only happened to be a feature back in the 1990s when I first had my analog cellular (CDMA, TDMA, PCS) with .6W portable brick phones and 3W mobile dash installed cellular phones.

Back then I knew that a non activated cellphone was able to dial only 911 as I had many laying around but that was back in the old analog days...

Those days were using lower frequency (UHF) up to 800 MHz - nowadays, the 5G has pushed it up to the microwave (SHF) bands...

Are you certain that these new digital cellular phones that have GSM, 5G, multi band microwave tech are able to still do the 911 only calls on an unactivated cell phone ?

If so, @Howard2k you may have saved me $180 per year on a cell phone bill add-on !

I am certain.

However it appears that I forgot to mention that my consultancy fee is $185. Apologies, but I do accept PayPal.

I do not have a cellular watch and have not tried this previously, but will get the cellular edition at some point for exactly this reason.

Thanks to @Howard2k - placed an AW7 order!

Ordered the cellular version and I will not activate the cellular as my iPhone is always nearby.

Cellular model ordered just in case I need 911 when my iPhone is not nearby...

Now the waiting to have it sync with my Paceline app and have the AW bill paid off by Paceline!
