I don't yet own an iPad, so I don't know for sure, but is there an area within iBooks where free books can be downloaded?

Public domain ones, like the ones from Project Gutenberg.

There are loads of free books on the Apple Book store. I've never read a book on iPad, more of a kind kinda guy.
