If you have Amazon Prime, definitely checkout the Prime Gaming page. You can get a ton of free games, none of which are tied to Steam. It's a good combination of AAA and indie titles as well. This is just a sampling of the free games available via Prime Gaming...

A brief scan did not reveal anything I’d want, but you never know what might pop up. Epic has given away some big name games.
The game has gotten good reviews on Steam, and I like that it features Nathan Fillion. The available games usually update weekly in the same fashion as the Epic Games Store.
They've given away some good stuff and IMO there's some great stuff on there right now. A Plague Tale Innocence is pretty great IMO. Baldur's Gate I and II are fantastic if you've never played them, granted a bit old. They also just added The Outer Worlds which I haven't played yet but heard good things about.
