When I my hard drive info is shown on the desktop next to the icon, it says I have 21GB free of 148GB, but in every other program such as finder and activity monitor, it shows I have 98GB free of 148. What's going on?

This is a common problem does anyone know how to fix this. It says I've got 7GB free when that is absolutely not possible.

Try this

I was getting so angry because mine was showing 92 GB free when i only have 44 GB free. I restarted, shutdown everything. finally it came to me that the 92 was .92 and it wasnt showing the whole thing i reduced the text size and sure enough 44.92 GB free. May not be same problem you are having but worth a try.

Use Disk Utility to "Erase Free Space" using the Security setting "Write Zeros to Disk".

This has never failed me.
