What does "free iPhone network and lock status checks" mean? You are just going to let us know that our phone is locked or unlocked and, if locked, to which network after we provide you our IMEI?

Apple stores and AppleCare can do this for free over the phone anyway?

How would this service be helpful when pretty much everyone knows whether their phone is locked/unlocked and to what network?

    Not everyone.
People purchase iphones 2nd hand and don't know exactly what network its locked to. There's many websites that charge for a similar carrier check service that the OP is doing for Macrumors members for free.
So if you're not interested its ok but its a nice gesture by him.
