Technically, the hardware inside your iPod touch is 2nd Generation.

Technically 2nd gen. But it is sometimes called a 3rd gen.

It's never called 3rd Generation. The only relation is that they share the same Model number. But it's still 2nd generation (MC-Model), in terms of how it operates.

I know that its a 2nd generation. BB and other stores call them 3rd gens.

Their dimensions are identical, so you can use second or third generation cases.

Appearance wise, both the 2nd and 3rd generation iPod are identical. So if you see that the case was made for 2nd Gen iPod touch, it can also fit a 3rd Gen (and vise-visa).

Yes. They are the have the same apperance. Most cases will be categorized for the 2nd gen instead of the 3rd gen. I would recommend Switcheasy!
