You downloaded the source instead of the binary. The binary is what you want.

Sometimes. I've had problems with it crashing with some MIDIs. iLoveMP3, on the other hand, hasn't crashed once for me when trying to convert a MIDI. I have not tested iTunes 7 with MIDI conversion yet.
