Free minutes not working

I have pay and go with O2 and am supposed to have 500 free minutes to any UK landline or O2 mobile, but I notice that my top up balance is still being charged 25 pence/minute. I texted O2 to activate the free calltime but I am getting charged. Can anyone advise on what I may be doing wrong? Do I need to set something in the iphone to make it recognize the free minutes?

Ditto. You could have even sent an on-line request to customer support in the same amount of time that it took you to type your post here.

Not to be rude, but customer service is going to fix your problem, not anyone here.
