You don't know the law.

You took things that didn't belong to you. Doesn't matter who's yard they are in.

It does matter whose yard they are in. The owner of the house or apartment is the rightful owner. Especially after someone has had 6 weeks prior to the eviction to take care of those issues. After eviction anything that is left in or on the property becomes the landlords or owners property.

The owner/landlord of the house or apartment stated that he had 1 hour to gather up his belongings, after that it is the owner/landlords property. Whatever is left when a person is evicted is the property of the person or persons who owns the property. That is the law. Conscience is another thing. However, Alpha has already stated numerous times that he will keep them UNTIL the man returns. He also stated that he will return the items back to him if he does. They will be in better shape remaining at his home until the man returns, then out on the yard being destroyed by the weather or vandals.

In all fairness, Alpha you should ask the owner/landlord for the permission to take them and get it in writing what had occurred, before you do sell or give away any of the owner/landlords stuff.

I think you are the only person who ACTUALLY read what I posted on here. That is a great idea, that you have about getting it in writing. I do plan on returning the machines to him. My dad's old PC recently died, and the ram from his PC is compatible with the G4. When/if the man comes back, he will have a surprise of an increased amount of ram. :)

Update: I have both the G4 and the G5, do not plan to sell either, and I have gotten the G5 to boot. I set up a RAID 0 drive setup in the G5, with a spare drive I had. It is pretty fast. The guy who got evicted still has not come back to claim his property. He knows I have his computers, he knows how to contact me (he has my contact info), but he still has not contacted me. If I had his information, I would return the computers to him, but unfortunately, I do not.

To be honest, I'd do the same thing, you guys know either someone else would have taken it or those computers would be totally trashed if they sat outside until the guy got back. I saw a house that was evicted but everything was behind a fence so no one could take anything. Well, the next day it rained, and everything was wrecked. Tables, chairs, electronics etc. They could have gotten use if someone was able to take them..it kind of sounds wrong but I mean if its future is the dump you may as well just take it before it gets completely wrecked by weather etc.

..just my two cents

Sweet holy mother of God. The first person besides the OP that understands what an "eviction" means. Sometimes nerds are so oblivious to everything that's not a computer. Point proven in this thread. Not one other person besides cat3rn and AlphaDogg gets it. (cat3rn, nice name)

Back on topic though...

Very interesting find on the G5. Good to hear things worked out for you, and I believe, strongly, you were in the right here. If he wanted them that bad, he had ample time to take them, and then, even still, he had plenty of info to contact you for them.

Unrelated...

I remember way back in grade school when I was little, I turned in something. I was thanked and told that I did all the right things that I could - along with, if the owner did not claim it in (more than enough) time, I could come back and get it. No one came, so I went back, and I am the proud owner of a worthy precious metal.

Moral...

Finders keepers. You did everything in your power, and were more than nice enough about it all. You got what you deserved - 2 very cool machines. :)
