Hi guys,

Kind of an odd story here. I have a 2015 MacBook Pro Retina 13 which was showing signs of screen coating issue. I contacted Apple about it and asked about the 4-year program but turns out I had call 4 months too late and the window for my purchase date had close.

Well I didn’t give up just yet and wanted to see if Apple would be nice enough to replace it for free as I really like my MacBook Pro and would want to keep it several more years. The screen isn’t bad it’s just starting to wear off on the bezel part near the webcam, but hey why not try right?

Well, on my third call the apple representative was kind enough to put me through a manager and that’s when the interesting part starts.

The manager told me I wasn’t eligible for the free screen replacement because it was over 4 years however, she told me she could try to start a replacement process to replace the whole computer. She picked the closest configuration to mine which is a 2019 2.4 256ssd with touchbar as the replacement unit and told me that I would get an answer within a week.

I got a confirmation email today saying that a TNT delivery guy would call me and that I had to send my MBP in to be “analyze” and as soon as they get it my new replacement unit would be shipped.

My question is.. how??? Lol Apple wouldn’t replace my screen, but they want to give a brand-new MacBook pro instead? Also, can they decide not to replace it if the screen isn’t bad enough for them? The manager told me they would just check it to see if it hasn’t gotten liquid damage or whatnot.

In some ways I’m happy if it works out and I get a new macbook pro, but I actually prefer my generation of macbook pro because the sd card and hdmi ports available as well as a great keyboard.

What do you guys think of this situation ?

Heck they’re offering me a brand new MBP for my 4 year old one and I’m actually hesitating.. that’s how bad the new keyboard and design is.

I would do it considering the keyboard warranty is until 2023... you may get a new warranty as well which might be eligible for applecare if you ask?

pros and cons considering.... The apple gods are in your favor and it seems like a good deal

Apparently, since it's a replacement, I would only get a 90 days warranty. The new serial number would be linked to the old one and its purchase date.

Yea I think I will, I shouldn’t really see a difference performance wise, I wish I could add the extra cash and get 16gb of ram but since it’s a replacement I can’t.

However, I’m still wondering if it’s a scam or not lol, I mean I’ve checked the email address that sent me the confirmation as well as calling Apple support again and asked them to check the file number.. but it just seems too good to be true. Like seriously, a brand new 2019 computer ?!

Has anybody had a similar expericne with Apple support ?

And how can I make sure that I'm not sending my computer to a scammer ? I know I'm being paranoid but it just seems too good to be true.

You definitely would see a performance increase as the new ones are 4 cores and the 2015 are 2. Also, the keyboard on the 2019 is the 4th gen of their butterfly keyboard and it is a huge improvement over the previous. I think you should do it if you haven't done so already.

I prefer the 2015 design myself, but in your case, I'd accept the new MacBook with a smile, walk briskly out of the store, and then make my way home with a BIG smile on my face...

Actually, I first have to send my 2015 in for gel to check it a bit and then they’ll ship the new one.

Yea I mean I'd take the offer. Yea sure the new keyboards are kind meh but if you hate it that badly, you can always sell it and buy a mint condition used mid-2015...OR an Apple certified refurbished Mid-2015 when (or if) it shows up in the refurb store again...
