I created two partitions on an ssd using OS 10.8.5 Disk Utility (13) and note that there are four extra small partitions which add up to about 580 mb were also created in the process. One is reported as type EFI System Partition (about 210MB) in Drive Genius 3, while the other three are "Apple_Free" (3.1KB, 134.22MB, 134.22MB). The ssd is on a newer tech raid card. Unfortunately I can only look with Drive Genius 3 as
the partition operation buttons don't work for some reason.

I know the efi system partition is needed. How can the "Apple_Free" partitions be removed and the space (around 4%) be added to one of the desired partitions? The "Apple_Free" partitions do not show up at all in Disk Utility.

Looking up EFI system partition revealed that the boot process is more complicated than I thought. Anyone know where the various processes are explained simply for intel macs?
