I have family in Canada and we have been using
WhatsApp for free texting. It's works like a charm.
Very fast and reliable connection. Also no need for
Logins and passwords. It's an amazing texting app.
The app is also available on Brickberries and Androids.
Only downfall is that both users need to have the app
    installed.

    At 0.99$, it's a steal!!!!

I think text now supports canada and if you download other apps and open them you can get credits which can lead to add free or calling.

Try textPlus 4. It's finally been updated to the latest version for Canadian customers (textPlus 4 used to be US only). As far as I know, you can text any Canadian or US number, with the exception of a few carriers not being supported.

It's free (ad based) so you can give it a try, you can also pay $2.99 to remove the ads forever. It also supports MMS, which is nice.

WhatsApp is the best 99 cents I've ever spent. It uses the data side, unlike conventional text messages. Upon install it populates itself with all your contacts. The first time you "text" someone, it sends them a link to download it for the same one time charge. Then you can cancel your text messaging plan. I have a large family. We calculated it's saving us over $200 per month for the text plans it allowed us to terminate.

Text Plus 4 works internationally. I txt message a Canadian member on this forum with it and it works like a charm. I'm in the US. It's a free download.

I was reading about WhatsApp and it seems as if the newest version doesn't allow txting for iPod touch - just a heads up if you have an iPod Touch.
