I had ordered one in December that came stock, but with a bad optical drive.

It seems one of the most common free upgrades is 1GB in a MacBook. I see a number in here; that's also what I got and what a friend of mine got. I envy those who got 2GB for free

Uh...what? What kind of "upgrade" are you going to get on an iPod? More RAM? A free engraving of someone else's name?

Except for the engraving, iPods don't have BTO options.
