Free year begins on device purchase date or redemption date?

I haven't redeemed a free year of ATV+ yet. I know you have X months once you purchase a device to redeem it. Does anyone know whether the one year begins from the date you redeem the offer, or the date you purchased the device?

I believe it is purchase date.

You have one year from purchase date to redeem the offer. The one year of free service starts when you redeem the offer. My service was not back dated to the purchase date, but then I didn't wait say 9 months to use it either.

Currently on the second trial extension from Apple. At this rate, I'll get 2 years of free service out of it.
