PowerMac g4 mdd, 1.25, 2G Ram

Suddenly freezes from time to time. No application in particular.

1) What, other than cutting power and re-booting, can be done? Any keystrokes that can get me out of this frozen state?

2) Why might this be happening?

Thanks

What Mac OS X version does run on it and how much free HDD capacity do you have?
Does Force Quit (Option/Alt + Command + Escape) work? Have you taken a look at Activity Monitor to see what might cause the trouble? Do you have any external HDDs connected to the PM?

I am using 10.5.8
About 50G of HD left.
As for the activity monitor, I think it would only be of use in my case if there were files kept of past events/activities; once the computer freezes, nothing (not even force quit) works. Just have to hold in the power button until it shuts down.
Very annoying.
