Theres the "Americans are fat and lazy" stereotype, and then we keep getting reports that Americans work far too hard, so which is true? Prolly both, we work hard so we can be lazy later.

What "fat and lazy" stereotype??? There is a "fat American" stereotype, but I never heard Americans characterized as "lazy". More like "fat from eating junk food and driving everywhere."

The french employees are not asking for a 13th month salary, they're just asking for a real salary. When you get a yearly salary in france, it's not divided in 12, but in 13. The so-called 13th month is not a luxury, it's just a way to distribute the money over the year. And the 13th month just help pay taxes.

That doesn't make much sense though so basically they'd be paid the exact same but spread over 13 months instead of 12 and they want to strike for that?

If I understand it right, teachers in the US are somewhat similar (I believe) where they may have a 9 month work year but get paid over 12 months. The salary would be the same amount yearly no matter what.

There is no reason for you to get those kind if benefits working a retail job. But then again France leans more towards socialism. So to us Americans it is lazy but thinking back on Marx, wouldn't it be a better life? Alternatively there would probably be no iPhone to speak of since there would be no incentives to ever make one ;)

Meh. I'm often embarrassed to be an American citizen. But I'm in the minority.

Granted what you said was true about the military used as a cash machine... Cough Dick Cheny Cough Halliburton Cough... Excuse me  Sorry.

I wouldn't be embarrassed to be an American Citizen. The Government is full of Crooks and Liars, but there really isn't much we can do about it. Someone may start out honest, but then power and money corrupts them all. Hence, at the minimum, Legal Insider Trading...

What winds me up is when some dumb American decides to go on a killing rampage in a school or something, they try to blame video games and violent films? Never the twisted idea that God told Americans it was their right to kill each other with guns??

America is kinda backward and not very evolved in that sense. Which it should be.

How can you accuse an entire country of being backwards based off the actions of a few individuals??

On that logic, ALL of Afghanistan's people are dangerous and terrorists. This is not true at all, the actions of a few... do not reflect on the whole country.

Define 'standard of living' where happiness is a footnote. Do you mean having more cash to spend on stand mixers, changing cars every two years and remodeling bathrooms? Or do you mean spending time with the family, taking vacations and seeing other countries? Per capita disposable income is a poor measure, which is why most developed nations are working on 'quality of life' indicators.

I basically agree with you here. But I still cant not poke at Europe. I guess its my knee jerk reaction to the self entitled. Probably created by listening to my own countrymen here in USA for the last few years especially. :)

ok, let's count the number of dead US soldiers over the last decades shall we ?

oh that's right, you really need to get back to school, i think that i missed some history classes...

That is both despicable and contemptible. I am not a yank, but I can tell you if it wasn't for them and their willingness to sacrifice themselves for people like you, the world would be a lot less pleasant a place.

;) Or so busy planning our holidays (or as US folks would say vacations), that we have no time to eat;)

I know. I really need that 13th month off. ;)

Maybe I can become a dual U.S./French citizen? 12 months of the year as an American, and the 13th month of the year as a Frenchman?

:D

Labour conditions >>>>>>>>>>> middle class consumers getting their expensive phones. I would rather my iPhone 5 was delayed another week if it meant improving quality of life for Apple employees, and that's in Europe, think of the condition Foxcon workers suffer.

Good luck to all the strikers.

Thirteenth month's pay? Lousy Smarch weather!

I thought that some members of this forum would understand that...

unfortunately i am wrong :(

I let a few pages of comment pass, seems you're the only one who paid attention on that (well maybe one or two others).

So sad. Bah, I'm French and live there, but work in Switzerlann. Abn believe it or not, just crossing the border and trying to explain our "lifestyle" is even worse than what I see on this thread.

I guess US citizens would get mad too trying to explain to a french guy that thing they have with weapons. Or why they have to involve God in each and every official speech... <- Get me right please, it's just an example, no harm meant.

And let me say for the record that there are LOT of people like me laughing at people like you. :p

Furthermore, what I said may have been crude and not so nice, but then again, I was responding to a poster who was insulting Americans. Also, everything I said was TRUE. If there are imbeciles in America who are truly "EMBARRASSED" by talking about our strength and being proud of America, and would rather live in France, then I say....

DO US ALL A FAVOR AND MOVE THERE!!!

The fewer of you living here, the stronger we become as a country. Sounds like France really might be the right country for you....

By the way, where is that middle finger emoticon I'm looking for???

Wow. Classy. For the record, I'm proud of America, just ashamed of people like you. But hey, we have freedom of speech, so you are welcome to proudly parade your ignorance and lack of education.

I have no idea whether the complaints are justified or not, won't say so either way.

But to strike on the day of the launch? STUPID. That's the sort of thing you do if you want to go to war with Apple, and remember, Apple fights mean. More, it'll anger the other employees having to pick up the slack, and many of the customers being inconvenienced on the day of the big launch.

If things were so bad that it's time to go to war and something this big, you'd want to lead into it, get the other unions in too, and plan for it. Not just "Hey, tomorrow's the big launch date. Let's strike"

Are you from an alternative universe where France lost WW1?
Mind filling us in on the timeline.

You're right, the prior post should have been "No wonder they lost every war they fought without the US on their side in the last 150 years."

Nobody complains about the execs getting millions of dollars, and the company is one of the richest on the planet. It's time for Apple to pay its share to everyone. And France are the just the first to ask...

It's time to realize that everyone is getting seriously screwed in the US, salaries have not increased... and have actually decreased compared to REAL inflation (the one that includes gaz prices, real estate, rents, and food prices... that's at least +100% over the past decade). It's time for those companies who are making huge amounts of money on the back of its workers to pay them properly.

What the story fails to say is how much are the workers getting for their job.

The french employees are not asking for a 13th month salary, they're just asking for a real salary. When you get a yearly salary in france, it's not divided in 12, but in 13. The so-called 13th month is not a luxury, it's just a way to distribute the money over the year. And the 13th month just help pay taxes.

Wake up and stop reading news like little teenage boys.

That makes no sense! THEY ARE RETAIL EMPLOYEES...

Retail employees who make more than any other average retail employee...

Take from the rich give to the poor... makes no sense.

You must be kidding. You're probably still proud of these top-loading, vertical-axis washing machines I saw during my time travelling through the US.

As an early-American adopter of the front-load washer and 2 disastrous machines later, I happily went back to an HE top-loader. Sick of the smell (stupid mildewy rubber seals) and poor longevity of the front-loaders.

You guys make the best cars, but your laundry machine design is nothing to brag about. ;)

I will give you dishwashers though. Go Bosch!

Wow, so you'd be okay with Apple closing their stores in France? Let's see....You're a European (or possibly French) citizen, posting messages in MacRumors. But you don't care about Apple closing stores in France?

I have to think if Steve Jobs were alive and running things, that union would be broken in 2 minutes. He had a history of being especially annoyed with whining and complaining employees, and a bunch of Frenchies pissing and moaning about not getting their wine and baguette every day would have probably sent him through the roof. Fortunately for the white-flag-waving French, they have the more even-tempered Tim Cook to deal with. Perhaps they'll get what they want. Personally, since France is such a ridiculous welfare state, I don't think the striking workers care one way or the other. Either they'll get what they want from Apple, or they'll get it from the French government.

You see, we here in the USA are LAUGHING at how lazy and weak the French people are. Keep saying what you want, but when you look at per capita GDP, the US is ranked 7 and France is ranked 23. Also, when you look at companies like Apple, Google, Microsoft, GE, etc., etc., where are they HEADQUARTERED? Where were they founded? Why does the USA have a history of entrepreneurs and free enterprise which far exceeds all of Europe? Why is the US dollar the world's leading reserve currency?

Yeah, we don't have labor unions like you Europeans do. But we sure know how to make more money than you, and, quite frankly, you and the rest of Europe would be under Nazi rule right now if it weren't for us. So, please **** and enjoy your McDonalds lunch and Apple products, okay?

First off, im from Denmark and if there were any Apple stores in Denmark I wouldnt care if they closed them, because we have plenty of outlets for Apple products elsewhere.

Secondly I must say that your comments fit the typical American egocentric way of thinking. "We're the best, **** everyone else. We gave you Mcdonalds and saved you from the nazis, so now you have to worshop us forever" give me a ****in break!

Yes a lot of great and succesful companies come from the US,and I love Apples products, but the price for the things you love about your country's business opportunities is big. The averrage American has waaaay less money than say, the average Dane. That is because most of the rich people and companies in the US dont care about the poor. Its succeed or **** you (that is the American dream as it exist today) Denmark is built on a foundation of solidarity, as is France. So what you perceive as lazy We see as solidarity for all, everyone should be treated fairly. And that is not up for discussion in big bad socialist Europe, its a fact.

I think you'll find that the US outranks everyone else combined in the the number of people killed by acts of aggression.

The US has done their share in this respect, most certainly. In fact, when they decided to go against Hussein in Gulf War (during H. W. Bush) and the subsequent Iraq War (during W. Bush) they were cleaning their own mess. The US conveniently ignored Saddam's continuing massacre of Kurds and other minorities because it was in their political interests to do so. They must've "felt bad" about it afterwards (which, in itself, screams of insincerity), but thats beside the point.

Anyhow, that does not negate the fact that the sacrifices made by our soldiers in Iraq War have saved millions of lives by overthrowing a murderous dictator. So let's not discount their sacrifice as "pointless".

I hope they strike and GET FIRED then replaced with someone who wants/needs the job more.

Be even better if Apple just said screw you french unions and pulled all their stores out, it's not like losing sales in that little country will really effect Apple's bottom line.

I hate Unions. ;)

I guess US citizens would get mad too trying to explain to a french guy that thing they have with weapons. Or why they have to involve God in each and every official speech... <- Get me right please, it's just an example, no harm meant.

Because we HAVE to protect ourselves from the possibility Obama will become a tyrant and enforce the welfare state on us. Also because God is REAL. Real I say!
