I have a 2009 Macbook Pro that I bought from a friend a couple years ago. I came home from vacation to find that my computer wouldn't turn on. I charged it fully and it still wouldn't turn on, although I tried all the fixes I could find online. After a couple days I took it to a local computer shop where they said the motherboard was fried, but the cost of repair was more than what I paid for it, so I wasn't ready to pay for the repair just yet. Then, the next day I tried to turn it on (wishful thinking) and low-and-behold, it turned on!
When the computer came on it still had my tabs open from the previous use and I remember now that I had a hard time shutting it off before leaving and eventually just gave up and closed it. The computer worked fine for a day, but then yesterday when I opened it, it wouldn't turn on again. After several regular attempts at turning it on, I held down the power button for about 10-15 seconds, the LED on the front started flashing quickly, and I let off the button. Then I pushed the power button once again and it turned on. Once more in the evening I tried to use the computer. It wouldn't turn on regardless of my various attempts to revive it. When I held the power button down the light didn't flash. Then again this morning I held down the power button, light flashed, the computer turned on.
So, my question is, is the motherboard really fried or is something else going on? I thought, perhaps erroneously, that if it's fried it wouldn't work at all. If it's something else, what do you recommend for diagnostics?
