Wait so are you telling me I can Text message someone on there cell phone with this app and for free - it wont charge me to text message them?
What exactly is the point of VOIP on this, if you are already paying for a cell plan? Why would I pay extra to make calls?
You can use AIM to send a text message to +12223334444 (their phone number) to send them a message for free. This works on the computer and any iPhone/iPod Touch program that uses AIM. I don't know about the other messengers.

Well for one if you make a lot of international calls then VOIP saves a lot of $$$!
This probably opens up the flood gate for those that was contemplating on jailbreaking the phone.

If you can sign on to AIM with those programs, then yes. The platform doesn't matter.

It works with any IM client but sucks ass as the IM comes from whatever number AIM or Yahoo use and is formatted all crappy like.

Yep -confirmed. I wasted about 10 minutes trying to figure out what was the mistake - then I tried one without a dot in it and it worked.
BTW, made a few calls over skypeout and worked OK - although if you are calling automated phones (conf calls/customer support etc.) - the key presses (dial 1 for english etc.) are not recognized. (Although it all works when using Desktop Skype.)

It works on any program as long as the number's on your AIM list.
Note that people will receive the SMS from a random number as opposed to your phone number, so you'd have to tell them that it's you. The SMS conversation also takes place in that AIM application as if you were simply IMing someone. So it won't show up in the SMS application...
That also means that without push, you won't receive it when they send it if you're not in the program.

I was able to call the test service with my iPT, but calling out on SKYPE always terminated the call... could be since I have no mic hooked up.
Works, though! Just haven't fully used it yet.

cool. but does anyone know when the earphones with mic for the ipod touch actually comes out? Apple Store still says coming soon. 🙁
Skype is like $5 a month for unlimited in and out calling. I don't have a phone line but I always have internet. You get the lowest cell phone plan and use wifi when you are at the house and you will save lots of money. If you have no wifi then this wouldn't be worth it.
So happy to have skype on my iphone! It was the missing piece of the puzzle.

Skypeout over 3G
From reading the story I don't think Skypeout calls will work over 3G, will it? Can any one confirm please - I am on T-Mo!? Just got to see how they are restricting it - as a policy or something technical, inside of the app or the phone.
AT&T network is another thing though - even if it does work, the call quality is going to be absolutely crappy.

The voice quality on fring is the same Robotic as the Voice Mail. Wonder if Apple is gonna fix this in the next update. I'm seriously contemplating moving back to 2.0.2 which was just fine.
