Oh and by the way, Opera 15 is also Chromium-based now.

Opera is a browser I've wanted to like, but it always has at least one deal-breaking flaw. In the case of recent OS X versions it's the fact that it triggers the discreet GPU in my system when other browsers (even Chrome) do not.

I use gfxcardstatus to force my GPU into Iris-only before launching Opera on battery power, and that does the trick :)

Considering such a step is unnecessary with any other browser, and that this issue has persisted pretty much since Opera switched to Chromium, I would rather be lazy myself than reward Opera for its laziness in failing to address the problem.

Not sure about this though, but I think it looks like every Chromium-based browser forces the dGPU.

That said, Chromium-based browsers perform the best in FutureMark's Peacekeeper HTML5 benchmark.

If you are good with this kind of thing, consider swapping the hard drive out for an ssd. They bring old machines back to life.

i am glad to read this :)
Chrome is terrible! They should issue a warning with it.

Still, an ssd would make your machine even much snappier.
