I just received my wife's iPhone 7 to replace my 3 year old Nexus 6p. Before that, I had a Samsung S II for 4 years. I ROMmed both and I was what you could call a power user. But since switching to the Mac (2014) and buying an iPad Pro recently (as the market for serious Android tablets is almost dead), I wanted to try out an iPhone. It's been a change, but not as big as I expected.

The main thing is the size. The Nexus is as big as a 7+. I used it to work remotely from time to time, but when my commute became longer, an iPad was a better choice for that. So a smaller phone is... freeing actually! I can drop it in my pants pocket and it's not in the way. I adapted quickly to the iOS way of doing some things (airdrop, task switching, leaving apps open, ...) because I’ve got the iPad already. But some things are infuriating.

The worst is probably setting an mp3 as the ringtone. I mean, what? 17 steps in the already obsolete iTunes? Come on, this is 2019. Hint, Apple: Airdrop - set as ringtone - done.

Minor quibbles aside, the iPhone 7 is a typical Apple product. It oozes quality, both in hand as well as in use. I never used a case for my previous phones and, despite getting one with this one, I’m not using one now. It feels much better without. I got this one for free, but if it ever dies, I’m hoping to replace it with a USB-C iPhone XIII in a few years' time.

At this point the iPhone 7 is still a good choice. It should still have 2-3 more years of iOS updates so you should be able to get by until you’re ready to upgrade. I went from a 7+ to XR to 8 so I understand what you mean about the smaller size.

Switched from my 4 year old dying Nexus 5 to 7 last year. Size change wasn't so noticeable for me as it's close enough, but stumbled on iOS restrictions and lack of customization. Was a long way to realize that I can't just connect my phone and dump files directly.

Hint for ringtones: use iMazing to load them :) Ringtones management (and some other stuff) works in free version, tons of useful features in paid.

I’m thinking of switching to an iPhone 7s from my Honor 9 as I have a Mac and an iPad, so it makes sense. I already sync Apple contacts and calendar to my Android phone.
Howver, I’ve been using Android for years and it seems more advanced than iOS to me. For example, I make heavy use of widgets and that’s the feature I’m going to miss most, I think - I have latest unread emails on one screen, today’s appointments on another. Dark Sky and a widget that shows time and weather at a few cities round the world where relatives live. iOS doesn’t do widgets, at least not in any way near Android capabilities.
Also, the battery life on the Honor 9 is excellent. Typically 40 to 50% left at the end of the day - and it charges in an hour or so.

Please say something to encourage me!

Jailbreak

Jailbreak

I wouldn’t look at jailbreaking as a solution, mostly due to the fact you need to pray you’ll get an older iOS model. It has more hassles you probably wouldn’t find with a native android experience(resprings come to mind). I ended up updating recently from jailbroken iOS 12 to iOS 13 beta just because of the bugs.

My recommendation would be to try and see if you can adapt to iOS, find a different way to do your tasks. I think the ecosystem, fluidity of iOS and optimization are worth that. But of course that is completely up to you.

Thanks, I don't want to try jailbreaking - I did it years ago with an iPod Touch (which I just used as a music player) but reverted. Can't remember any details.

So far I'm managing to cope but the big thing I'm missing is 'Profile Scheduler' - on Android, this sets the profile based on calendar entries, location, schedules, etc. (eg to 'Meeting' when events in specific categories in my calendar are taking place - so I don't get embarrassed in the the theatre, etc). As far as I can tell, Apple won't let apps control profiles, if such things exist on an iPhone.
