If I had no complaints about my current phone, I wouldn't upgrade at all. These days, phones are way overpowered for what they do, and even a few-years old model handles its tasks just fine.

I am still using my iPhone 8+ that I got on launch day in 2017. It is the best phone I've ever owned. I still marvel at the thinness, enormous display, and gorgeous form factor of the 8 Plus, which IMO reflects the true embodiment of iPhone design perfection. I'll upgrade when Apple goes back to slim rounded edges, as I am not really moved by the latest crop of bulky, heavy, squared faceID iPhones.

I also jumped from a Day-One iPhone 8 Plus to a 13PM on its release day. Even it it might seem to be a big jump, I was mostly disappointed with the 13PM overprocessing of the image and video. Otherwise the battery life is amazing. Go for a 13 Pro, Pro Max or 14Pro/Pro Max. I would choose upon a good deal.

Is your iPhone 8 on its original battery, and if so, what's its Maximum Capacity?
I’m in the same boat on whether to upgrade from an 8+, wife’s riding me on the offer for a free Apple Watch SE and iPad 9 with VZ but I’m content riding my 8+ to Sept ‘23 for the iPhone 15…

But to answer your question mine is 77%.

I can recommend the 13 Mini if you want to keep the same form factor. It's also the cheapest iPhone in the lineup if we ignore the terrible SE. And it's pretty much the last chance to get one of these since the Mini line has been discontinued.

I randomly tried one out while waiting for my 14 Pro Max to ship and liked it so much I cancelled that huge flagship, although I admit part of it was that I could have it immediately instead of waiting 4 weeks. And I actually prefer the small notch on top over the island thing that was reported to actually make the notch appear bigger in practice since it's further down and not all the way on the top.

But the display is just as small as your old one, and due to the higher resolution text will be appear sharper but smaller. You'll either need good eyes or turn up the scaling at which point I find the display to be too small (it would essentially end up looking approximately like it does on your 8+ in terms of what fits on the screen, it would of course still be much sharper and of better quality).

A big part of the appeal for me is honestly that it's a relatively cheap phone in today's market and still offers the full experience minus the 120Hz ProMotion, and I prefer the notch style over the 14 Pro series' dynamic island. The camera is excellent as well.

Previously I always went as big as possible since only those phones would have the best battery life, the most features, and so on. But the Mini does all of that easily now (again, minus the 120Hz).

My current iPone 8+ is still going strong with zero issues or complaints. I recently picked up an iPad Air 5 to replace my older iPad Pro 10.5, and so far I quite like the upgrade. For about half an hour I kept reaching for the home button, but I soon got used to the Touch ID and the swiping gestures.

So now I’m wondering if I should move on from my iPhone 8+.

As I said to open my 8+ works perfectly and I have zero issues so I don’t need a new phone. But with Boxing Day promotions beginning I find myself wondering about upgrading anyway.

Traditionally I never upgrade to the latest model—I usually upgrade to two or three generations back (of the current model) to simply save money and because I don’t need the latest and greatest for my needs. When I got my 8+ the iPhone X and XR models had been available for some months earlier.

So now the question becomes if I upgrade then which model do I go to. And for the record, for my needs, I don’t see the point of upgrading to Pro, Max or Plus models. The entry level models will have upgraded tech over what I have now and the 6.1in. screens will already be larger than my current 5.5in. screen while within roughly the same chassis size. I also wouldn’t consider an SE because I don’t want to go back to a sub 5in. screen.

Apple went to the square edged design with the 12. And if I followed past practice then the 12 would most likely be the go-to model.

So iPhone 11, 12, 13 or 14?

Is it even worth considering the 11 when for not much more I can go to the 12? And would the differences of the 13 or 14 justify the added expense over the 12?

Thoughts? Opinions? Suggestions?
I upgraded from the 8+ to the 12 Pro Max a couple of years ago. Worth the upgrade. Haven’t seen much change from the 12 to the 14 worth an upgrade. However, if I were looking to upgrade from the 8+ today I would upgrade to whatever the current model is (14 pro max). I also recently upgraded my iPad Pro 10.5 to the 12.9 M2. I’m glad I did upgrade finally. The 10.5 still runs fine, just felt it was time because I was starting to miss out of features.

Best of luck in your decision!

Be aware that the regular 12/13/14 has a significantly narrower screen than the 8 Plus:

You’d have to move up to a 13 Pro Max or 14 Plus to stay with roughly the same display width.

Yeah, if he likes the 6.7” size, the 14 plus would be a good fit for the OP. Maybe they have enough room with the regular 6.1” but for them, trying the 14 plus could be interesting.

Yes, it’s on its original battery and I have zero issues battery wise. I charge it about every two days. I can charge it to 100% or at least thats what it says when I charge it, but the battery maximum capacity says 85% of new.

I switched from an 8 plus to a 14 plus and I couldn't be much happier. In my case the 8 plus had a number of issues. I arranged to live with some of them but the microphone and speakers that shows up lately forced me to buy a new one. I was just about time. I totally love the shape and the swipe-up actions without the home button (and I'm really a home button lover). The telephoto camera was useful from time to time but I never really thought about buying the pro. I managed to buy the 14 plus for less than 1000€ at amazon.
It's also great to have the same weight compared to the 8 plus. The 14 plus feels even a bit lighter.

iPhone 13 or 14. If nothing else for the ability to have two eSIM active simultaneously and support for standalone 5G - both features that are present in the iPhone 13 and 14.

OP mentioned his iPhone 8+ is going strong so waiting for September is a better option.

I was wondering if anyone would mention the 14 plus. Damn near identical in size and weight to the 8 plus and a far superior device.

Upgrade to iPhone 13. It’ll be a decent update from your 8+. The iPhone 14 doesn’t have enough changes from the 13 to justify the added expense (unless you’re getting the larger screen size of the iPhone 14 Plus). iPhone 11 isn‘t a huge update from 8+ and is 3 years old at this point. iPhone 12‘s camera isn’t as good as the 13‘s. So iPhone 13 is the sweet spot for your needs I think.

If you don’t plan to upgrade for awhile, which doesn’t seem like it if you’re still using an 8+, I would get a 14. The extra RAM over the previous 11,12,13 will come in handy later down the road.

The 8 Plus is still good. Get a battery replacement when it's time and it'll last another few years.
Currently, it's still supported by Apple.
Not sure if you have the funds available but better to get the 13 model to future proof yourself, if it's still available in your area. Some carriers or stores still carry it though refurbished models are available in some areas.
Not much of the difference to the 14 models except a slight camera update.

Went from 8+ -> 13 Pro -> 13 Pro Max (PM) as I missed the larger screen size.
Dimension wise.. the 8+ is very similar to the 13 PM but the latter has a larger screen size and longer battery life, though it's still a bit more bulky to carry and to use with one hand.
The 13 Pro also has a nice, large screen but without the bezels, a decent battery life and more compact and easier to carry and to use with one hand.

Good luck!

iPhone 12 models are the worst of those choices so definitely skip that. They have terrible batteries. Not necessarily how long the phone lasts but the health. I’ve never seen an iPhone 12 model that didn’t have horrible battery health in a year.
My launch day 12 Pro has pretty decent battery heath still. Easily lasts all-day.

My 12's battery life has been bad for awhile now, its health is at 81% after 2 years. Luckily Apple gave me a replacement earlier today. I'm really looking forward to the 14 PM, which should be way better.

Here's another thought: wait until next year when the iPhone 15 comes out, then get one of the iPhone 14 phones (or the 15, if you want to splurge). My guess is that you'll be able to get the 14 at a substantial discount at that point. Or even a 13, to save even more.

If you're on an 8+, then you aren't limited to iOS 15.x. If your phone is still working, then you aren't in a rush.

Hmm… Very interesting.

A 13 or 14 is overall smaller than my 8+ but would still give me a bigger screen. A 14+ is near identical in size to my 8+ but with a significantly larger screen.

Hmmm…
This is because the display size is a diagonal measurement (corner to corner) and so on the 14/14+ also includes areas where the 8+ now has bezels. However, when watching full 16:9 aspect ratio content (e.g., movies) on the iPhone 14, the picture will actually be smaller than on your iPhone 8+ (longer diagonal measurement, but smaller width for viewing in 16:9). Whereas the 14+ will match the 8+ 16:9 aspect ratio size because the case (and display) is the same width. With that said, on the 14 and 14+ you can also watch a movie in "full" display (no bezels), but it wont be in 16:9 and some of the viewable content will be cut off above and below.

I would go with a 13 Pro Max or 14 Pro Max, forget the standard 13 and more so forgert standard 14. Or even get 14 Pro or 13 Pro.
If you plan on keeping this phone as long as you kept your 8 Plus, you want as much in it as possible.

I have the 7+, and I'm also thinking of upgrading. Let me share my thoughts:

Here are the phones I would consider:
- iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max: Apple's best iPhone today. Cons: price and availability.
- iPhone 13: Probably best in terms of price and newness. It's cheaper than the iPhone 14 while sporting essentially the "same" chip. Cons: it only has 4GB of RAM, so longevity might be an issue years from now. Also, it doesn't have telephoto lens, although you'll get an ultra wide lens.
- iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max: If you have the budget, this is a great buy. It has 6GB of RAM, telephoto lens, and pro motion display. Basically all the user facing premium features of an iPhone except the dynamic island. Cons: it's already discontinued, so you might have to hunt around.

Honorable mentiones:
- iPhone 14/14 Plus: if you look at youtubers and tech forums, nobody is supposed to like this phone. However, it is actually still a decent buy. It has 6GB of RAM so longevity is better than the 13. The 14 Plus also will give you excellent battery life. Cons: no premium features like telephoto lens/pro motion display, and for the price, the 13 Pro/Pro Max is a more premium phone for the money.
- iPhone 11 Pro/Pro Max: Best phone on the classic rounded design. Weight is still reasonable. Excellent battery life, and performance is still great. Cons: 4G only, and probably harder to find as it's quite old.

Phones I would avoid:
- iPhone 11 regular: At this point, if you like the design, better wait for the upcoming SE 4.
- iPhone 12 lineup: smaller batteries than the 11 series lineup, 1st gen inefficient 5G modem resulting in poor battery life. Add on 64GB base storage, you will have to spend more money to get reasonable storage (128GB of more), and by then, might as well get the iPhone 13.
