Hi Guys,

has / had an X and has switched to the 11 Pro?

Was it worth it for you?

And if so, for what reasons.

I too upgraded from the X to the 11 Pro.

Pros:
  1. Better camera
  2. Better battery life
  3. Faster overall
  4. FaceID is so much quicker
  5. Matte finish on the back
Cons:
  1. Intel modem chip (Note: It's not as bad as I thought it would be...But still not up to par with the Qualcomm chip.)
  2. Heavy in weight

Heavy in weight is not a con at all! Makes the phone feel way more substantial, and we get battery life for it!

As for the intel chip. How can you see any difference? My X was messed up from day one and would freeze and crash apps. I am very happy with the Intel chip.

Regarding the difference between the Intel and Qualcomm chip....It's noticeable if you use Verizon. In areas where I received full bars on the Qualcomm I see 2-3 bars on Intel. At home, my wife has a iPhone 8 with the Qualcomm chip, she will get 1-2 more bars than I will on the 11 Pro.

Oh interesting, I had no idea. I have AT&T and never get great reception at my house or work.

I had AT&T (Cingular) from 2001-2018 before I moved to Verizon due to AT&T's coverage was getting worse in Hampton Roads.

It's my understanding the AT&T version (GSM model) iPhones always used the Intel chip and the Verizon or SIM free model always used the Qualcomm chip before Apple and Qualcomm had a fight.

I'm trusting the 2020 models will have Qualcomm chips for Verizon and SIM free at minimum since Apple and Qualcomm resolved their differences.

Yeah maybe I have just gotten use to the Intel. The frustration part is that at work it doesn’t matter if it’s AT&T or Verizon. Both don’t work well at all.

My work place has poor coverage too - the building acts like a faraday cage. I'm fortunate my company placed repeaters inside the building to provide reception. Even with the repeaters, AT&T would drop every other call and I couldn't stream audio.

LTE doesn't always work well with thick walls or in a big building. 5G will be even worse in this scenario. The higher frequency, the worse the penetration through walls or the coverage over long distances.

Hi Guys,

If you’re on the fence about upgrading, then maybe run your X on iOS 13.1.1 for a while and see how you feel.

I normally upgrade at 1 or 2 years depending on the features of the new phone but, this year, I’ve decided to stick with my launch day X.

If I was into taking photos, then I’d upgrade tomorrow. I haven’t played with the new phones, but I’ve been following the photo threads and the photos from the new devices look amazing.

The battery on my X seems to have improved since upgrading to 13.1.1. I have no proof of this, but my usage hasn’t changed, yet the battery seems to last a good bit longer. Maybe dark mode is making the difference. :)

FaceID also seems to work faster. They said they’d improved the speed across all devices, but I had doubts. It’s not massively faster, and it won’t be as fast as the new devices, but it just seems slightly quicker than it was. Maybe they’ve changed the timing of the animations or something to give the illusion that it works faster, but whatever they did...I’m happy. :)

The new devices will definitely be faster overall than the X, but I can’t say that anything I do on my X ever feels slow.

Only you can decide whether the general performance improvements and better camera are worth it to you, but for me, this year, they weren’t. :)

I’ve gone from an X to an 11 Pro and was a little doubtful I‘d see a difference.

But I have. I really have. I still miss Touch ID but Face ID is so improved on the 11P that it is much more bearable. The cameras are _amazing_, battery life is much better and for me the 11P zips along more smoothly on ios 13.1 than my X did.

The only con for me is the lack of 3D Touch but iOS 13 seemed to bork that anyway.

I still have my X here and comparing them I have absolutely zero buyers remorse.

PS. I got the MG colour because it was the only one in stock at the time. Love it.

I have a 11 Pro. I've been able to go 24 hours without a charge with light use. My battery is at 61%. :D

Keeping my iPhone X since I got a basically brand new, unlocked, open box unit less than six months ago from BestBuy. iOS 13 makes it run faster and look cleaner. Got a new case and it’s like having a new phone.

Was excited for this year’s iPhone but then it turned out to be a camera, durability, and battery upgrade only. Not worth it for me even though I value those improvements. You can rest assured that the 2020 iPhones will make the iPhone 11 Pro look like hot garbage.

I will add the Night Sight feature on the 11 Pro is impressive in low light conditions.

I went X to 11 Pro. As mentioned by others, everything works a bit faster. I REALLY like having a wide angle lens, as 28mm was one my favorite lens back in my camera days. To be honest, I did not find a huge leap from X to 11 Pro, as I was very happy with my X, but I am still happy I did upgrade.

I had an X on AT&T with the Intel modem and I had awful reception for the past 2 years with no service in many large buildings like my local WalMart. My 11 Pro DOES get service in the WalMart! Haven’t tested the other dead zones. There’s a stretch of road I drive a few times a year where I used to have service and now there’s a 20 minute section where my X lost service. If the 11 Pro works there I’ll be super happy.

As far as speed iOS 13 was running fast on my X and FaceID seemed much faster after that update. FaceID on the 11 Pro is faster still, but it really isn’t a big deal. It’s gotten to the point where swiping up on either phone to unlock takes longer than FaceID anyway so it’s unlocked by the time you’ve swiped. I think some of the people who don’t like FaceID sit and wait for the unlock symbol rather than immediately swiping.

Speed elsewhere on the phone - I’d love to see a controlled side by side test that isn’t just benchmarks. Apple still sells the 8 so things still have to be optimized for older phones. App developers want to support far older devices to ensure the largest customer base. It’s hard to find anything that NEEDS the new phones. I wouldn’t upgrade from an X for speed, but it’s good to know that speed will come in handy in 2 years if I’m still rocking this phone.

My 11 Pro camera app is absolutely laggier and buggier than the X. It takes a second to load the camera. Sometimes when I take a photo from the lock screen the camera just shuts off to black and no photo is taken. Sometimes when I take a photo in good light (not Night Mode) there’s a 1 second delay before the shutter fires and the framing is all off. Sometimes the photo has to load to edit it. Combine this with the necessary slow shutter speeds for Night Mode and the camera feels much much slower than the X.

Photos in daylight are effectively the same. Don’t expect miracles there. Wide camera is awesome for me... I’m known for super wide shots in my indie movies so this was a big draw for me (not that I shoot my movies on the phone). Night Mode is just incredible as long as subjects aren’t moving.it is worth the upgrade for Night Mode alone. I have a feeling that in a year, people are going to know to hold their poses for 1-3 seconds to accommodate it and the similar modes on other phones.

I’m thinking Deep Fusion is the missing piece that will make daytime shots amazingly better than the old phones. I’m bummed it isn’t released yet. It could be the Night Mode of daytime shots. Especially because phone photos have always fallen apart when pixel peeping.

The 11 Pro is heavier for sure. It’s absolutely noticeable when using one handed. I’d gladly trade the steel for aluminum (I’m in a case anyway) and lose wireless charging (which I use every night) if the phone could shed some of this weight. Sure it feels even more premium but that novelty wears off on day two and then my wrist just has to live with the weight for the next 2 years.

Speakers are far better than the X. I believe they got a big upgrade on the XS for loudness so we’re getting two years of improvements. Was a very nice surprise.

The screen was the biggest surprise for me. It’s hard to explain, but my 11 Pro is a LOT easier on the eyes. Seems like the PWM has improved (people are saying it went from 240hz to 290)... I could perceive flickering at low brightness before but not now. The biggest change though is off-axis viewing. My X had a sweet spot where it started to shimmer and darken if you weren’t looking at it dead on. I got used to it, but you could barely look at the whole screen without one edge starting to shimmer.

My 11 Pro has almost entirely eliminated this OLED problem. It stays far brighter off axis and there’s almost no rainbow shimmering. This screen now has all the best aspects of OLED with all the best aspects of Apple’s amazing IPS screens. It’s the biggest single change for me. Forget Dolby Vision, they should have announced “no more shimmering” at the keynote.

  2. Better battery life

FaceID speed improvement was an iOS 13 feature

I thought the hardware was improved in the 2019 phones too? I’ve got my X next to my 11P, both on 13.1.1 - 11P is def faster.

I think the CPU increases since the X also speed it up. So iOS 13 brought a boost to all phones and each generation X, XS, 11 have their own 15% or whatever CPU increases. I think the hardware change is that the front camera is slightly wider allowing a greater field of view to work with the flood illuminator.

The X was pretty great on iOS 13 but the 11 Pro is faster and works at better angles. Not drastic to me overall.
