please note I'm not turning up my nose at simply needing an adapter. In fact through 4 laptops I think I've always needed an adapter of some sort to connect to various monitors.
But for some reason it's now become a confusing and frustrating mess to get a workable adapter solution at all.
I've just gone through two attempts at purchasing usb c to dvi adapters through amazon, apple themselves offer no such adapter. Both attempts display a rainbow static image when connecting my 23" single link dvi Cinema Display from 2005 (also note this is NOT the 30" which I know would require dual link dvi to work). Tried every resolution setting with the same result. The monitor itself still works just fine, connects fine to my previous MacBook Pro using a dvi to mini-dp adapter.
so I went looking online to see how people tackled this... and from what I read, it sounded like people were daisy chaining multiple adapters to use dvi. which in addition to being absurd, sounds even more confusing.
do I use my dvi to minidp connector and get a minidp to usb c connector? When I look those up, the products explicitly say "do not connect with a secondary adapter". Do I have to buy apple's $30 dvi to hdmi and then also apple's $90 (now approaching the price of a new monitor!) usb c to hdmi connector (who's product page is mostly 1-star product reviews saying that adapter has terrible reliability, let alone being daisy-chained.)
This all starts feeling like a black hole of wasted time and money and a non-so-subtle nudging to to "just buy another monitor." (the majority of which still need an adapter!) And it just feels like a bit of an insult considering the monitor itself still works, and would likely work with many other computers still on the market that didn't bother to be this draconian about pushing on an under-developed usb c exclusive ecosystem (that is still feels like a mess 2 years in)
is there anyone out there that has faced this situation and has a reliable working solution? (not just in terms of types of connectors; like an actual product that they have confirmed works to drive a 23" Cinema Display)
I'll be eternally grateful!
