There has been a few people from Europe saying they have the same issue, it has to be something with the phone. It's just really odd that late at night I have no problems on 3g

It is really odd. My speeds are back to normal for now...
3.25 Mbps down
1.62 Mbps Up

Odd indeed. In the past few days, I have noticed that during the daytime, the speeds are terrible, ranging from 0 - 3000 with an average of 200ish, but during the late night (11:30PM-3AM) the speeds are normal to very fast 3000+ down. Don't know what this means, but it is surely peculiar.

if you check the previous page, I posted the results of my speeds and how they changed...

Count me in too from Northern Virginia

I have to enable edge from like noon time until 7PM to actually use my phone :(

This is all very interesting though and I cant believe there are so many NOVA people on Macrumors! I will update tomorrow regarding speeds.... This is all very weird

Ditto here. Fully pegged 3G signal with call drops, calls breaking up. Another time I was in a restaurant and my 4 had no signal at all and my friend right beside me had 3GS fully pegged making calls. Something is definitely buggy, hopefully they come out with a SW fix soon. Also, I do have a case on this phone, my bumpers came today so I am going to try those tomorrow.

Also, I notice my wireless signal has been flaky like this too.

Got bunch of screen caps of no response with 5 bars.

Going to Reston store tomorrow to have it checked out.

Must be why I had to wait in line for 12 hours.

Where were all you guys on launch day? When I mentioned macrummors while in line everyone looked at me like I was an alien

I just got off the phone with Apple where I talked to 2 people a CSR and then his manager. I told them that I did all the troubleshooting steps so the manager then put me on hold to call AT&T because it might be their network. After 10 minutes in hold, he comes back and then say that AT&T told him that their network is fine. So I am not sure if going to my apple store will fix anything at this point ? AT&T says: it's hardware and then apple says: it's the network
Guess who's stuck in the middle of this?? us !!!!

I'm in the Lehigh Valley as well and I'm experiencing the same for about two days now! Sometimes it's fine and blazing fast and other times I can't get anything to load... All of this is with full bars and 3G! It's gotta be AT&Ts network.... So annoying because I'm stuck on wifi if I want to actually do anything on the phone!

Let me know how that goes! I live like 10 mins away from the Reston store so post here or PM me the results/what they tell you.

I work 5 mins away from Reston and I used to get great 3G speed with my 3GS and full bars. Now with my iPhone 4, I still get full bars but non-existent 3G. Almost like it's off. It just keeps timing out and it's frustrating going back to Edge because it's so slow. It really sucks having the latest and greatest and it not doing the simplest things like connecting to the internet :(

Here is a potential fix:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/958013/

It is the story of another user on here who had this issue on his iPhone 4 resolved. I am going to be calling AT&T tomorrow to try it out.

I simply paraphrased what the other fellow said regarding resetting / updating the sim card with new network/tower information and my CSR did it for me. It did improve things (actually made my 3G usable, though it's nowhere near the 7.2 Mbps they advertise...I got more like 1 Mbps but at least I can surf the web / check email).

I'll play around with it tomorrow morning and see if the improvement sticks. I live in Chicago and from what they told me the towers are degraded as well, so 3G as a whole isn't great :(

This happens to me all the time, at least once a day. I wonder why I pay for AT&T... Good thing I have a Sprint OverDrive for when that does happen.

You guys got my respect though for camping out  :apple:

I posted this earlier but everybody mad at AT&T is wrong i hale this same provlem here in Germany on tmobile or telekom.de network here in Germany.

Phone problem for sure!

I'll try this way too. We do NOT have AT&T here and we have this problem!

I'm really starting to think that this isn't even an AT&T problem as people in various other countries are seeing this crop up as well.

Seems like a firmware problem.

Take a look at this video posted earlier...

3GS has no problem, i4 won't connect. This is exactly what I've seen. If it were AT&T both phones would stall out.

I forgot, do you have your 3g(s) still? And did you get data successfully with that?

Good vid. That is exactly my situation as well.

But this morning, it's blazing again. Working as normal.

I just ran 10 tests and all we avg. Of 2100 down and 800 up.

I still think it's network somehow.
More later w/ further reports as the day goes on.

I don' know what's up, but I was rocking this morning, but testing in the same place 30 mins later I now suck again.

My situation regarding this issue is quite location-specific:

at home, I have the issue that everyone else has described: 3G, full bars, perfect voice and text service, yet no data. Switch to EDGE, and data is back. Meanwhile, my wife's 3G running iOS4 has no problem.

everywhere else, no problems with data.

I wonder if it's something to do with HSUPA, likely some firmware bug that's causing incompatibilities with the network. The 3GS was upgraded to HSDPA, but they held off on HSUPA until the iPhone 4.

Interestingly my connection is working pretty decent atm. the upload is slow, but im not so worried about that, getting between 1-2Mbps
