This is nothing related to the network...

Given that, I should be golden. I don't think I've ever used 5 GB a month and, until baseball started, I barely used 1 GB a month. AT&T should LOVE me. And again, it shouldn't be stone dead even if I'm the worst customer they have. It might be really, really slow, but not completely dead. It shouldn't even really be any slower than EDGE, ever, because I can always turn off 3G and EDGE almost always works just fine. If AT&T can kill my connection because they feel like it even though I've done nothing to deserve it in two expensive years as a customer, I should be able to walk in there right now, cancel my contract without an ETF and flip them off on the way out without hearing a word from anyone.

* Those rules were just examples to give you an idea of what could be done. There are an almost infinite variety of rules/policies that could be implemented

* AT&T would be smart to protect their network, even if it meant some unhappy users. It's better to tick off a few people here and there as compared to having an entire network or region go down.

* It could be that some of the policies are overly draconian or poorly written and no data gets through at all

* I would tend to think that any throttling restrictions placed against the iPhone 4 would be removed at some point in the near future. As some have noted, it's a flagship product.

You also have the confusing situation with the antennas on the iPhone 4, which most certainly are impacting iPhone 4 performance. Sorry Steve, but it's not a "bars" thing - people are having data and voice issues here directly related to the antennas.

As Colbert might say - BUMPERS PLEASE.

Again, no inside information here, just possibilities based on my experience at places other that AT&T.

For me, this did exactly nothing.

I bought a case 20 minutes after getting the phone. It took me about 10 minutes to find the antenna problem. Makes me wonder what kind of culture exists at Apple these days. And THAT is why I seriously doubt it's a problem with AT&T. At least not an intentional problem like throttling.

Well, as I mentioned, the bottom line is that, despite how much I like the phone and some of it's features, it's ultimately unreliable. I don't really care about the reasons like that laughable "wrong bars math" rubbish and I don't really care who's at fault. All I really care about is that the thing is either made to operate reliably within a reasonable amount of time (days, not weeks, Apple) or I can return it WITHOUT a restocking fee and WITHOUT an extension on my contract. What really burns me is that I have a perfectly reliable phone sitting right next to me, an AT&T Fuze. But since the damn iPhone uses the new sim card, I can't even transfer the card into a phone that actually works and use that. I'm totally stuck with an unreliable iPhone. If I didn't have an old pre-paid card that works in the Fuze, I wouldn't have any reliable phone at all.

Colbert would probably point to this as an example of "intelligent decline". If you happened to see the episode with DEVO. Which was excellent, BTW. :)

Reps would not have a clue about this, or if they did, I'd think they'd be explicitly told not to say anything about it.

Traffic engineers would have set up these rules, likely with the guidance/approval of at least middle management if not CxO-level management.

I would suspect this would be tightly held information.

Again, I have absolutely no inside knowledge of anything going on at AT&T - I'm just explaining what could be happening.

Thx for your insight!

Obviously you didnt read any part of the thread. It has nothing to do with safari. It is all data apps. Speedtest, facebook, anything times out, or loads really slow.

What the hell is wrong with 3G!? I have been having issues for DAYS. I'm getting torturously slow download speeds and super super fast upload speeds! I can't stream Pandora over 3G anymore emails aren't loading, etc.. I almost wish I had my 3GS back! :(

Is the super slow download, fast upload thing happening to other people? Like 100 kbps download and 2,000 kbps upload!

att rep told me to reload firmware. Is that bs? If not how do I do it?

Connect the phone to a computer with iTunes and hit the Restore button. It simply reloads the firmware. Make sure to back up first if you don't feel like having to set everything up again from scratch.

0 and 0 here over 3G. However, this is the most prettiest brick i've ever laid my eyes on :)

I was having the exact same issue on and off. Although now they are both low. Where are you located?

Downtown Minneapolis area. I have a cell tower literally across the street from my apt window so it's definitely not a reception issue happening here. Especially since uploading is faster than I ever got with my 3GS.

I'm thinking it may at least be a combination of factors, some on the network, some on the handset. Unfortunately, that makes for a variety of symptoms and complaints, so the noise level rises everywhere.... ...and I think there are more than enough cultural problems within AT&T to go around as well.

The higher upload speed is a function of HSUPA being on both the handset and the network...

I find for the last two days, it seems the network is slow at the beginning of the day and gradually speeds up as the day progresses. I’m not sure why. Anyway, use AT&T’s Mark the Spot to report your issues.

Good idea. I just heard about that app a couple hours ago and you reminded me to d/l it.

I'm so sick of people claiming the issue for this problem is AT&T's network.

The IPHONE 4 is definitely the problem.

I have done multiple side by side tests with my iPhone 4 and my wife's 3GS. Her 3G is blazing fast while the iPhone 4 hangs and hangs. Sometimes the page will load after 30 seconds or so and other times safari will just time out completely.

I will have random episodes where my 3G speeds are back to normal, but that usually lasts about 30 minutes tops, then I am forced to switch to Edge for my phone to even work properly.

I really hope apple fixes this in an update shortly. I certainly do not want to wait the 'few weeks' until they come out with the 'fix' for the reception issues.

IMO this problem is much worse than the stupid death grip reception woes.

It is much worse. However it can be both parties fault. And as stated before ATT has the capability(who knows if they are) to throttle based on phone type. Furthermore from what I have read iphone 4 uses different technology to connect to the towers(which may require certain settings at the tower to handle all of these new connections). So it could be apple or ATT's issues. But since they are in an exclusive agreement it is both of their responsibility IMO.

I've never said it IS the network, I've said it COULD be the network.

FYI, nearly 20 years of cellular network experience in the industry here. You?

Listen I simply tried to explain quickly a situation I have been experiencing that may help the rest of you eliminate some theories. I never called you nor anyone else out for being wrong...just sharing my specific story but please like the majority of the people on these forums instead of being productive and working together as a community everyone gets so ****ing offended at the slightest hint that someone may have a different explanation for an issue. I can honestly give a damn if you own AT&T and built this garbage network by hand. If you have "20 years of cellular network expericence" then I guess you should send me your address so my wife can make you a batch of cookies. Instead of going on and on complaining or simply ********ting about some nonsense issue that doesn't exist I attempted to share something that I haven't seen or read much about.
To elaborate for those of you that don't feel like sending me your resume - I have 1 32GB and 2 16GB. The 32 is mine and one 16 is for my wife, the other 16 for my sister. We all happened to be together last weekend and my sister went to show me some article on the BBC app and although all 3 of us were showing full 3G bars, her phone had a connection time out so she tried to use Safari which showed the same spinning wheel until it too timed out. Obviously I found it strange being that I had full 3G so I tried on my phone and it loaded instantly. I rebooted her phone and everything worked flawlessly. Thought it was an isolated thing until Monday when my wife called me in the afternoon to let me know that the same thing happened to her. She saw me reset the phone the day before, did the same thing, and it worked. Same thing happened again on Tuesday to both my wife and sister and Wednesday I went to AT&T and got 2 new sims. Didn't help my wife or sister as they both are resetting pretty much once every 24 hours. Obviously the issue could be one of a thousand different things. I personally think it isn't the network as I can stand 3 feet away and use 3G with no issue and a reset of the phone solves the issue, but I'm no expert nor did I ever claim to be.

I Have a genius bar appointment today. Should I push them for a new phone? How easily do the replace your phone?
