Same problem for me...
To temporarily solve the problem I've decided to turn off the 3G and go with Edge. No problems with Edge, just a little bit slower than a typical 3G. To do this go to Settings < General < Network.

All....the....freaking...time. In NYC, I've been showing full bars, 3G all over, and half the time, page just stalls and stop loading.
When this happens, I have to restart the phone. And then all my email, messages, will quickly all hit when the phone restarts. Will work ok for a while, then seems to lock up again, and I have to restart again.
Last night, out to dinner...my iphone 4 and my v my girl's 3G. Both side by side, loading same sites.
Hers worked 100% of the time, always faster...mine stalled about 40% of the time.
I'm at a loss of words.
Funny thing? She insisted on updating today...and now she's complaining how bad her service is now at her office with similar issues.
Puzzled...we may return them both and wait til end of summer. Just way way way way too many issues with this phone as of now. (I too suffer from the death grip...bit of tape assisted there)
But too many bugs. Way more than my last one or my ipad...
Dave
ive been having this problem a lot since i got the phone. if im out especially in building where it shows good signal it take it forever to load data. text goes through fine but data takes forever. much slower than my 3gs why is this? is it my phone or are others getting this?
You nailed it Dave - I work in NYC, same exact issues..... even with my phone reception, I have to reboot etc.
For anyone testing a 3GS against a 4...
Is the 3GS running iOS 4 or some version of 3.1?
Maybe iOS 4 is the problem and not the iP4 hardware?
in my tests the iPhone 3GS was running 3.1.3. i will update the 3GS to iOS 4 and report back.

I get this often wirh ATT 3G in our city -- lotza bars, nothing happens.
It was so frustrating, I got the Sprint Overdrive 4G portable hotspot. Its more expense each month, but now I have an working alternative for the iPhones and iPads we like to take with us everywhere.

Was his 3GS using os4?I took my phone to the apple store because of this. They replaced my phone. It worked for the weekend without problems. Now yesterday it started happening again. Went back to the apple store, they where going to replace it again, but the guy said maybe I should try ATT before they replace it. So I did.
I took it to the att store, and the replaced my sim and re provisioned my data as the apple store had said they should do. No luck. The ATT store had 2 iphone 4 demo's on display at the store. I tried it on them. SAME ISSUE. The att rep took out his personal 3gs, we tried it again. Mine didnt work, his loaded the page, every time. Tried it agian on the 2 demo's in the store. Once again, they didnt load, his 3gs did.
Something is up...
