It was the day after the new moon last night, so it's a 3.7% waxing crescent moon. This is how it looked as I picked up my 15 year old daughter Francine from indoor soccer practice.
Francine even commented she could see the moon outline still, I informed her that's called "earthshine", as it's actually light reflected off the earth , onto the moon .
Via iPhone 7+ camera.

Yeah, I cheated and did a composite. I cheated a lot. I still like it. :)

It won’t hold up to close inspection, even in the larger version, but it works okay on small screens.

Tried to capture the moon eclipse on my Canon R5, too much clouds here in SE Michigan

But the iPhone 11Pro did a decent job thru the clouds

March 14, 2025 total lunar eclipse.
Here in SE Michigan, imaging now.
Will process and stack them tomorrow.

captured coyotes howling at the moon, kinda cool and neat.

Focus on this L 100-500 for the moon , infinity is not crisp, has to slightly go less ..

These are stacked every 60 seconds, Canon R5 with 100-500 L lens at 500mm, ISO 25600, f 7.1
I used 1/20 for totality, and then had to increase the shutter speed as coming out of totality got brighter, so used 1/60 keeping same ISO & f stop.
Was all on the fly what looked "nicely exposed" on the swivel viewfinder with my red astrolight shining..

Here's the result; full totality March-14-2025 SE Michigan

Leaving totality ...

Btw it was a struggle to track the moon, pointing near up was hard to align the slot in the ball head.
Then moving for earth rotation. After a series of many images, once moon moved to edge of frame.

The slot you see here, align then tilt way back to point up.

I looked at these 2 geared 3-way ball heads. Went with the Benro with the extra mtg plates already. I’ve got 2, if I get a 70-200 L will put this 3rd one on it.
With the gears will be much easier to manually track sky objects.

Another possibility for ease of shooting would be a gimbal head, such as a Wimberley. A lot of wildlife photographers use gimbals for quick responsiveness in moving the lens around as their subjects are moving (birds, animals, whatever). The gimbal head also makes it easier to point the lens pretty much straight up at the sky.
