Fullscreen extrenal monitor quicktime and using Leopard

When watching videos on my external monitor, my aluminium Macbook screen goes black. On my whitebook I was able to watch things and use my mac at the same time. Am I missing something, because this is really annoying, my Mac is my dvd/media player and I like to be able to do work at the same time...

VLC does the same thing.
