Hello all,

Quite a while ago I used PPC Media Center to play 480/720p videos from youtube in fullscreen. Now I see the options use 240p 3gp mobile youtube option, which is quite low quality and I know my G4 can do better.

Which is the best option? I've seen TenFiveTube, but I don't want Leopard. I've tried smtube but i can't get it to work and I hope there is an easier option as with all the edits in the smtube thread i don't understand what I have to do now.

Thanks in advance

I'm not at a PPC right now, so what do you mean, "Now I see the options use 240p 3gp" in PPC Media Center?

Seeing as you have PPC MC installed, you'll have youtube-dl - a quick fix is to copy the video url, then in Terminal type youtube-dl -f 18 "the copied URL" and it will download the video at 360P for you to watch as you wish. Change -f 18 to -f 22 if you want 720P.

Try to work SMTube out though - it is the most efficient solution for high quality.

Smtube is your best option. However if you don't mind cut and paste, tenfourtube (which no longer works the way It should) can still get you 360p mp4 links that you can paste in to coreplayer, QuickTime etc. Open tenfourtube, find a video, click HD, right click on "watch video" link, copy, then paste link in the "open url" menu of coreplayer, then full screen coreplayer.

Cheers

Mea culpa, the post for SMtube on both Leopard and Tiger has grown into an ugly beast.

If I ever get to it , I will move it to a github page and clean up the history so the posts are more direct and understandable.

In the meanwhile which steps did you take on Tiger to get SMtube running , can I assist you with that ?
What is not working ?

Does anybody know how to fix the now broken PPC Media Center application? Youtube-DL is no longer working and there is no updated version out there ... For the time being I'm using ArcticFox and the mobile site of Youtube in order to download the video files from googlevideo and to play it with VLC.

A few days ago it worked just fine for me - did YouTube change something again?
[doublepost=1559595027][/doublepost]Just try to download a new version from http://ytdl-org.github.io/youtube-dl/download.html and put it in /usr/local/bin/ where the old version should reside

This is what I'm getting right now (see pics)

I'll try replacing / updating ytdl manually tomorrow and report back if it works.

Thanks for your help!

EDIT: After downloading the updated youtube-dl file and copying it over to /usr/local/bin/ PPC Media Center works normally again. Thanks again for the solution! :)

So it's me again, I'm encountering a new problem that has to do with some sort of an SSL error. I don't know if it is due to the fact that I installed Python 3 and updated my Python 2 version yesterday (via the official installer from their website) but I have python also installed via MacPorts (because I tried to run pyload). Checking the version of youtube-dl in Terminal reveals that I'm up to date. Does anybody know what I have to do in order to fix the issue? Are you experiencing issues with PPC Media Center? I'm uncertain whether I've messed up my system or YouTube changed something. Thanks!

I think once you start messing with Python you can end up with 2 versions of youtube-dl.
When I experimented with mps-youtube I had to update youtube-dl with pip:
sudo pip3 install youtube-dl --upgrade
