This is really frustrating. Especially considering that they are discontinuing the native YouTube app in Ios6. on top of that, I'm finding that clicking the title in embedded YouTube videos on blogs no longer takes you to the YouTube app or mobile site. Good luck favoriting, commenting on, or even just watching other videos from the same channel.

The iPad is rapidly being rendered useless for YouTube. Particularly disappointing, since the iPad is largely a media consumption device.
yes I'm thinking of going to an Android Pad because of the loss of the YouTube App, I just don't know what Apple are think of!

Easy solution

There is very easy solution. As somebody previously mentioned there is no Youtube App in iOS6. So instead of typing to your favorite browser "m.youtube.com" simply type "www.youtube.com". Enjoy your time spent on iPad :)

No, won't work.
Can't do it on Safari, and when you can, on other browsers, reach the desktop site, the videos use Flash.

Hi imacken, it works for me on Safari, Chrome and Atomic Web. See loading behaviour of Safari on attached collage. Note that on the middle picture Quicktime icon appears for a second. I've never installed anything like quicktime so I am not sure what program is actually loading in the background. Try to figure out what is going on with your Safari. Try to also scroll to very bottom of the mobile youtube site and press DESKTOP

Does not work for me either

There is no way that I have found to view a regular site. Even when you try to go to YouTube.com, it forces you to the mobile site. There is a desktop link at the very bottom of the mobile YouTube site, but as I said before this does not solve my full screen problem. It does however allow me to view and post comments, but still cannot reply to specific comments, only in general. I find it strange that more people are not having similar problems, or even that suggested fixes work for some people and not others. Could Internet provider have anything to do with these differences?

Edit: example, I just typed in the http://www.youtube.com, and as soon as it started loading it pushed me here, http://m.youtube.com/index?&desktop_uri=/

Edit 2: other problems I have with the mobile site is: there are no recommendations, inability to edit favorites

FixYouTube bookmarklet

Use the following syntax if you want to full screen a YouTube video:

www.youtube.com/embed/videoname

Yeah, this works. I have made a quick&dirty bookmarklet to reload the yt video:

FixYouTube
javascript:var%20s=window.location.href;window.location.href='http://www.youtube.com/embed/'+s.substr(s.indexOf('v=')+2,11);

Worse

It has now gotten worse. Now when I try full screen, video only takes up about a third of the screen

Edit- now I can no longer fast forward videos, wtf

Use Desktop link at bottom right

I was having the same problem when I searched for a YouTube video on google. I couldn't get it to go fullscreen until I switched to the desktop version using the link at the bottom right. Now when you hit the fullscreen icon it fills the entire screen just like it did with the YouTube App.

I always thought it was dependent on the video format or codec. Mp4 will use the iOS QuickTime player, while flv will use YouTube's HTML5.

I must say that the universal YouTube iOS app is a great app by Google. I didn't like waiting, but in my opinion well worth it.

I have the same problem, haven't found an answer. But if you fold your cover up to the triangle and rest it on the screen, it covers the top bar perfectly. Slightly less annoying.

The Answer

Hello, I too have been finding this ridiculously annoying, however, I have discovered the solution. All you do is swipe up with one finger across the tabs / search bar and they disappear

:D

This is perfect and I can't believe more people are not up voting this post.

Once the video is loaded just tapping this bookmark reloads the video with the option to expand it leaving it with NO VISIBLE CONTROLS, NO BROWSER CHROME, and NO APP (except Safari of course).
