Apple says

Before you use your MagSafe Battery Pack for the first time, fully charge it using a Lightning to USB cable with a 20W or higher power adapter.

Do we have to?

And also its status light seems to be off after a few seconds. Does that mean it’s no way to know whether it is fully charged without attaching to an iPhone?

If Apple is saying to do it, there's probably a good reason but obviously you don't have to.

As far as the light goes, sounds to me like it'll be amber while it's charging and green/off when finished.

I did not fully charge mine when i got mine yesterday. But probably should have. It works fine.

Mine only shows amber for a few seconds after it connected to the cable. A bit confusing ....
