Hi,

I can't seen to get the search to be my friend here.

Are there any performance comparisons to the 15" nTB still available on Apple's site that starts at $1999 vs. the fully loaded 15" TB?

But, I am speaking about a fully upgraded version of each. So the old style with the i7 2.8 and the new TB with the 3.1 GHz Kaby Lake. (Pictured below)

Also, if I recall correctly did the old 15" used to have a graphics upgrade
that is no longer available, correct?

Thanks,

Yes the old one had a dGPU option that’s no longer available. It’s also on a haswell cpu that’s 3 generations behind and hex core chips are due for the 15 inch machines this year.

I wouldn't be so sure about that, Samuelsan. First of all Intel has yet to release any mobile hexa-core processors. So far, only Coffee Lake Desktop class CPUs are available. Second, these have to include the Iris Pro GPU instead of the regular Iris GPU because at least so far, Apple has been avoiding the weaker and cheaper graphics. And third, Apple has to incorporate these into their MacBook Pro lineup.

As we speak nobody knows whether or not we'll get new MacBook Pros in 2018.

We will get new MBPs in 2018. Hexcore chips expected Q1, and Apple not keeping pace on this would crucify their market share.

Right. And you know this for sure because you've recently had lunch with Tim and he confided in you personally? Nobody knows what we'll get in 2018. Nobody knows whether we'll get anything in 2018 at all. Is it possible? Most certainly. Is it likely? Nobody knows. Is it certain? Nobody knows.

Widely leaked that intel chips are releasing in Q1. And assuming that happens, if you think even Apple could ignore the biggest jump in CPU performance until 2019 you are sorely mistaken.

Since the 8th gen low-end 15W chips are quad-core, it's fairly likely that the 45W chips will move to six cores. The same happened to nearly all desktop Core i5 and i7 chips, no reason not to move forward with high-power notebook chips. Especially since AMD's Ryzen Mobile is a serious competitor, and AMD for sure won't hold back.

The iGPU shouldn't be a problem, since the current 15" MacBook Pro already uses the weak-ish iGPU, but always pairs it with a dGPU. The reason for this decision is that AMD's Radeon Pro chips provide more display lanes, which were necessary to provide the option to use two 4k displays (2 lanes each) + the integrated display. With newer DisplayPort and HDMI standards, a single lane would be sufficient for these screens, but that would cut compatibility with lots of screens out there.

We'll see next week anyway, Intel is expected to show the full line-up of notebook CPUs at CES.

They are coming Q1 2018 Apple will use them in the 15 inch along with AMD graphics, they don't care about Iris Pro GPU anymore intel have practically given up on Iris Pro anyway only apple used them in the first place in any numbers. The 2016 and 2017 15 inch macbook pro's didn't use Iris Pro graphics either.

Its so likely as to be almost certain.

Well, I can't really argue with these kind of facts based on speculation and likeliness.

I'm out of here.

So should i return my newly purchased unopened 15” because hexacores are coming?

I think i can return until February on B&H , correct me if i’m wrong. Bought in December.
[doublepost=1514915217][/doublepost]But what happens with the Apple Care registered to it???

Well. Do you need the machine now/ do you have a fall back machine to use if you return it?
And, if hexacores do drop - will you be kicking yourself for not waiting ?

Only you can answer those questions.

Don't know about the AppleCare I am afraid!

When is CES? That’s my first question.

I’m currently laptopless with no computer to fall back. Been a month without a personal laptop stationed in Latin America.

I do really need a computer now, the MBP is flying next week from the US along with the spare part to fix my MBA.

It’s just all a hassle to be outside US, i get back in 6 months. I could use the MBA and keep the MBP unopened in the states. Then arrange a return, but i don’t know. It is all bothersome as i’m not first hand there in the US.

I’m seizing that i will have my family to visit me so they can bring my MBP down here to Latin America. Even if i did, i don’t know what happens to the Apple Care+. Not sure, i suppose B&H refunds it too, but in case they don’t i’ll keep my machine gladly.

It’s not the same as i was in the US and can walk at a Best Buy/Apple Store anytime.

The new systems from Apple would not be available within your time frame. Likely WWDC at the end of June at the earliest.

CES is next week (9-12th jan I think). But yeah you do need something now. I'm in Europe so can't really comment on US / Latin American returns etc.

WWDC at end of June is equally just speculation. There is not evidence for it either. But if chips launch in January its highly unlikely Apple could wait until June - they will jsut loose too much market share to others (Caveat: the one thing that might change the equation is if intel only produce a trickle like they are doing with coffe lake desktop).

Thanks Jerry it’s true, nothing will come before the WWDC, at least i’m like 7 months away from a replacement. Prefer to use MBP i recently ordered than await the long wait. If needed, and the performace jumps are more revolutionary than incremental will probably sell it.

But right now is ok. 7,8 months working on a 11” MBA that’s 6 years old is asking a bit too much.

Thanks Mercurian. Will use then the one i just ordered. July, August is a bit too much to hold on. Will sell and buy again if needed in a future then.

A release of the new models at WWDC or even later is just as speculative as an earlier release. For what we know, the next MacBook Pro might just as well be released in February. This actually wouldn't be the first time where Intel announces new chips just weeks before they're commercially available in high volumes and Apple putting them into their products soon after.

They may ship sooner, or later. But rumors is spring for the 45W CPU. But, no one knows for sure.

are you happy with your current model? Are you sure we'll see hexacore CPUs? Why not use what works for you now and not worry about what Apple may do in the near future. Btw, I don't think we'll see any updates until 2nd quarter, so if you return your machine now, you may have an extended wait

You need it now 6 months of what you need, is worth more than a future computer that’s faster simple as that. It’s a bummer but it’s life.

Appreciate your service, Many Thanks!

As for your new 15” sweetheart, I’d be counting down the days till she arrives. Forget what’s “coming @ WWDC”, Intel’s Hex core series procs, &/or when the two’ll meet up. You’re making use of an ‘11 MBA, and as a 2012 & 2015 15” rMBP owner - I couldn’t be happier. The 2012 has a 768GB SSD, the ‘15 a TB and both with that builds top shelf CPU, RAM options. I’m still surprised how quickly the ‘12 boots up, installs updates and flies through the day like the day I bought it. I love the 2015’s addition of force touch and the improvements to the SSD speeds, as well as the battery life - but man, I’d definitely dig the new model.
I’m holding off because I’ve zero justification for purchasing a new one lol, you, my friend - deserve it. Getting that much outta an ‘11 11” MBA... spectacular! Now it’s time to retire it!

All the above speculation is just that. Intel’s yields are never as massive in the beginning, especially with the higher performance, tip binning chips. I’d be surprised if we see another update until this summer or fall and if earlier, with a 6 core CPU, knowing Apple it’ll also have the 32GB TAM, 2TB SSD, - paired up as a ‘Pro’ type model initially, carrying the price tag to match

Don’t worry about what’s coming, you’ll be enjoying your new one when it happens and until then :0)

Be safe
J
